Powder is stirred into cold brew, lattes are topped with protein-fortified foam, and ready-to-drink cans promise a caffeine hit alongside a hefty macro count.

It looks like proof that coffee has changed for good. But the coffee industry has seen this pattern before. A nutrient briefly reshapes menus, then settles into the background.

Protein coffee isn’t a gimmick to wave away entirely, but its current momentum owes more to marketing timing than to any lasting shift in how people actually drink coffee, and this distinction is key for any brand considering entering the category.

You may also like our article on why chasing trends in coffee can be risky.

Why protein coffee is everywhere

Protein’s dominance didn’t come from nutrition science alone. It grew out of three trends meeting at once: fitness-focused social media, the rapid uptake of GLP-1 weight-loss medications, and food marketers attaching the nutrient to everything from cereal to soda.

In the US alone, Gallup reports that 11% of adults currently take a GLP-1 medication, up from 3% in 2024, and 15% have used one at some point. These drugs suppress appetite, so users are advised to prioritise protein in order to preserve muscle mass while losing weight. This advice has made protein the leading nutrient in wellness conversations.

Coffee was a natural landing spot. The “proffee” trend, protein powder blended into iced coffee, has generated more than 20.2 million related posts on TikTok since gaining traction. Ready-to-drink brands moved early, and Starbucks followed in September 2025 with a protein cold foam and latte line offering up to 36g of protein in a 16-ounce (454ml) cup.

For most consumers, the appeal is straightforward convenience. One cup delivers caffeine and a hefty protein dose, without adding a shake or a separate meal to the morning routine.

Kyle Thibaut, chief executive of Everyday Dose, has watched this pattern play out among his own customers. “We saw this with customers adding protein to our flagship Coffee+,” he says. “They were using the one ritual they rarely skip to get more protein and set themselves up for the day, so we built Protein Coffee+ around that behaviour to make it easier.”

Health and wellness marketing

Researchers have documented black coffee’s health benefits, from antioxidants to modest metabolic support, for decades. Even so, marketers have recently repackaged coffee as a “healthy” category in its own right, and this repositioning carries commercial weight.

The global protein coffee market is projected to grow from US$6.67bn in 2026 to US$11.53 bn by 2034. This pace of growth has drawn roasters, retailers, and consumer packaged goods giants, all keen to claim a share of the functional beverage boom.

The wider functional coffee category, which includes everything from adaptogens to added vitamins, is expanding just as quickly. The global functional coffee market is projected to grow from US$4.98bn in 2026 to US$8.48bn by 2031. The scale signals that “healthy” coffee is now a formal product segment, not a passing marketing trend.

For brands, this is the appeal. A functional claim lets an “ordinary” cup of coffee command a premium price. For consumers, though, the label can blur an important line between coffee that supports health and coffee that borrows wellness language to justify a higher price.

Protein coffee arguably wears the latest costume in a familiar marketing story. Butter coffee promised sustained energy, collagen coffee promised benefits for skin and joints, and mushroom coffee promised calm focus. Each had its moment, then settled into a small, loyal niche rather than becoming the new normal.

Kyle argues the underlying shift is broader than any single ingredient. “Consumers increasingly expect the products they use every day to do more for them, without sacrificing taste or experience,” he says. “We are big believers in habit over hype here. The real test is whether a product delivers an outcome people value and want to return to every day.”

Health is the new customisation

Younger consumers in particular treat their coffee order as a form of self-expression, and social media has made visible health choices part of this. Adding protein, adaptogens, or collagen to a drink now functions the way oat milk or flavoured syrup once did: a customisation that signals values as much as taste.

Kyle sees this as an opening for brands rather than a threat. “We are seeing a shift from subtraction to addition,” he says. “This gives brands a much broader canvas for innovation. But added benefits should never come at the expense of what makes the product enjoyable in the first place.”

This opening is unlikely to stay fixed on protein for long. Fibre is already emerging as the next focus, with food and beverage forecaster Datassential naming it the leading health trend to follow protein in 2026, as attention shifts toward gut health.

But Kyle cautions against chasing this shift reflexively. “I don’t think brands should treat nutrition like a trend cycle,” he says. “Growing interest in fibre doesn’t make protein less relevant. The job is to listen closely, understand where there is a real need, and ask whether your product is the right vehicle to deliver against it.”

New health trends are already emerging

Coffee brands are already testing prebiotic and gut-friendly additions in cold brew and ready-to-drink lines, using the same convenience logic that made “proffee” popular.

Over half of consumers say they are interested in trying “fibermaxxing”, and curiosity is strongest among Gen Z who pushed protein into the mainstream in the first place. If coffee brands chase fibre with the same urgency they chased protein, the category risks a familiar cycle: a rushed rebrand, a short-lived sales spike, and another ingredient already waiting to take its place.

A protein or fibre launch can still be an opportunity for a coffee brand, one to revisit sourcing, formulation, and taste rather than simply chase a hashtag. The brands taking this approach are the ones likely to outlast the craze.

Protein coffee isn’t going away entirely, but its ubiquity says more about its cultural moment than about a permanent shift in how people drink coffee. GLP-1 adoption, fitness culture, and marketing incentives pushed protein to the centre of the conversation at the same time, and this alignment won’t last forever.

As fibre, and whatever follows it, claims its own spotlight, protein coffee will likely settle into a smaller, steadier niche, much as collagen and mushroom coffee did before it.

If you’re interested in increasing your sales & acquiring more leads, check out PDG Media, our sister marketing agency dedicated to specialty coffee.

Protein coffee FAQs

Why has protein coffee become so popular?

Rising GLP-1 medication use, which suppresses appetite and requires higher protein intake, combined with fitness-focused social media and aggressive marketing, pushed protein into coffee. Brands like Starbucks capitalised quickly, turning an existing daily ritual into a convenient way to hit protein targets without extra effort.

Is protein coffee actually good for you?

It depends on the product and the drinker’s existing diet. Added protein can help some people, particularly those on appetite-suppressing medication. However, health framing is often used to justify premium pricing, so the label alone doesn’t guarantee a significant nutritional benefit over standard coffee.

Will protein coffee last, or is it a passing trend?

History suggests it will shrink rather than disappear. Butter, collagen and mushroom coffee all followed the same arc: rapid hype, then a settled niche audience. Protein coffee is likely to follow suit as fibre and other ingredients compete for attention.

Photo credits: Everyday Dose, Laird Superfood

Perfect Daily Grind

Want to read more articles like this? Sign up for our newsletter!

Estimated reading time: 7 minutes Key takeawaysProtein coffee’s rise stems from GLP-1 drug use and fitness-driven social media…

[36
103,61,60,446
post-607963","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-nutrition","tag-health","tag-ie","tag-ireland","tag-nutrition
["GET
