{"id":608067,"date":"2026-08-29T07:20:13","date_gmt":"2026-08-29T07:20:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/608067\/"},"modified":"2026-08-29T07:20:13","modified_gmt":"2026-08-29T07:20:13","slug":"red-lion-statue-in-high-wycombe-gets-new-tail-and-rear-leg","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/608067\/","title":{"rendered":"Red Lion statue in High Wycombe gets new tail and rear leg"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">A town landmark has been restored to its former glory after undergoing a fourth restoration and receiving its second new tail.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Sculptor Colin Mantripp said he is &#8220;relieved&#8221; to have again completed the restoration of the well-known red lion statue, and hopes it will not need further work for another four years. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The wooden lion, which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/cq56gqgwv4yo\" class=\"ssrcss-1e0jzsh-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">sits above the former Red Lion Hotel<\/a> on the High Street in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, was previously restored in 2017, and Mantripp said regular maintenance work must now be carried out to avoid a fifth restoration effort.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">He spent a week carrying out the latest repairs in the &#8220;hot sun&#8221; and said hundreds of passers-by stopped to praise his work, in a variety of different languages. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The restoration cost about \u00a33,000 and proved to be more extensive than initially expected, as the statue had suffered weather damage on all sides.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Wet rot meant the lion required a new rear leg, carved from pine, as well as a replacement tail.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"A town landmark has been restored to its former glory after undergoing a fourth restoration and receiving its&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":608068,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[31],"tags":[307,304,305,306,308,93,61,60],"class_list":["post-608067","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-arts-and-design","tag-arts","tag-arts-and-design","tag-artsanddesign","tag-artsdesign","tag-design","tag-entertainment","tag-ie","tag-ireland"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/608067","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=608067"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/608067\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/608068"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=608067"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=608067"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=608067"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
