Norovirus is one of the most common stomach bugs in Ireland<\/p>\n

Following the closure of a luxury hotel<\/a> this weekend after staff and guests were struck down by the norovirus<\/a> bug, we take a look at the signs, symptoms and how to avoid it.<\/p>\n

The HSE confirmed this afternoon that its Department of Public Health in Dublin and the Midlands has been investigating the outbreak since Monday, 24 August.<\/p>\n

Members of the public are being encouraged to acquaint themselves with the signs and symptoms, as seasonal illnesses typically surge during this period, including norovirus.<\/p>\n

While these bugs tend to be unpleasant but manageable for most people, they can pose serious risks to elderly people, young children, and those with underlying health conditions, reports RSVP Live<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Norovirus, widely known as the winter vomiting bug, is highly contagious and triggers vomiting and diarrhoea. It spreads easily through close contact, contaminated surfaces and food, making outbreaks particularly difficult to contain once they take hold.<\/p>\n

Here’s what you need to know about preventing the virus from spreading:<\/p>\n

Stay at home and away from work or school for a minimum of 48 hours after your symptoms have cleared. You should also refrain from visiting anyone in hospital or care facilities, or going out socially while unwell, and for 48 hours following your recovery.If you’re suffering from vomiting or diarrhoea, it’s advisable to avoid Emergency Departments – rather, telephone your pharmacist or GP for guidance. It’s vital to stop norovirus from entering healthcare or care settings; when staff become unwell, it can lead to service interruptions or even compel facilities to close temporarily.For vulnerable patients who develop the virus, the consequences can be particularly serious.However, if you feel you’re genuinely unwell, don’t delay attending the Emergency Department, but ensure you notify reception staff of your symptoms so suitable precautions can be taken.Wash your hands frequently and thoroughly with soap and water, and sanitise any surfaces or objects that may be contaminated or soiled. A bleach-based household cleaner is most effective.Wash any clothing or bedding that might have been contaminated separately on a hot cycle to destroy the virus. Don’t share towels and flannels.Dispose of any infected faeces or vomit by flushing it down the toilet and clean the surrounding area thoroughly.Avoid consuming raw, unwashed food produce.<\/p>\n
