{"id":609357,"date":"2026-08-30T15:44:09","date_gmt":"2026-08-30T15:44:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/609357\/"},"modified":"2026-08-30T15:44:09","modified_gmt":"2026-08-30T15:44:09","slug":"cork-pharmacies-launch-free-service-for-unused-medicines","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/609357\/","title":{"rendered":"Cork pharmacies launch free service for unused medicines"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"\">Hundreds of community pharmacies in Cork are to offer a free unused medicine return and disposal service under the new MediBack scheme funded by the  <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.echolive.ie\/corknews\/arid-41903383.html\">HSE<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The nationwide initiative allows people to return unused, unwanted, or expired medicines safely to their local community pharmacy for safe and responsible disposal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">More than 1,900 community pharmacies around the country, including more than 200 in Cork, are participating in the service, which aims to protect both public health and the environment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Research previously commissioned by the Irish Pharmacy Union found that 27% of unused medicines were thrown in household bins while 6% were flushed down sinks or toilets.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The research also found that two out of five people were unaware of the risks associated with incorrect disposal \u2014 medicines that are not disposed of correctly can contaminate water systems and contribute to wider environmental and health challenges.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Elizabeth Lang of the Irish Pharmacy Union said: \u201cPharmacists across Ireland have long called for a national medicines return scheme and we are delighted to see MediBack launched.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Mediback \u201cwill empower people to dispose of medicines correctly, protecting their families, their communities and the environment&#8221;, she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cThe scheme is also a practical opportunity for patients, families and carers to review what medicines are in the home, what is no longer required and what may not be being used as intended.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cWhen returning unused medicines to their local pharmacy, people can consult with their pharmacist about their medicines, how they are taking them and whether they have any questions or concerns.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cThat gives pharmacists a clearer picture of how medicines are being used and supports safer, more effective care for patients.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Hundreds of community pharmacies in Cork are to offer a free unused medicine return and disposal service under&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":609358,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[33],"tags":[79,103,61,60,371],"class_list":["post-609357","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-medication","tag-cork-news","tag-health","tag-ie","tag-ireland","tag-medication"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/609357","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=609357"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/609357\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/609358"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=609357"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=609357"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=609357"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
