{"id":609495,"date":"2026-08-30T19:06:09","date_gmt":"2026-08-30T19:06:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/609495\/"},"modified":"2026-08-30T19:06:09","modified_gmt":"2026-08-30T19:06:09","slug":"ireland-south-mep-calls-for-terms-good-friday-agreement-to-be-respected","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/609495\/","title":{"rendered":"Ireland South MEP calls for terms Good Friday Agreement to be respected"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>An Ireland South MEP has said the terms of the Good Friday Agreement need to be respected.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.radiokerry.ie\/news\/billy-kelleher\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">MEP Billy Kelleher<\/a> made the call after British Prime Minister Andy Burnham recently said that a referendum on a united Ireland &#8220;is off the table&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The Fianna F\u00e1il MEP said that the Good Friday Agreement is explicitly clear, and that the British Government cannot rule out the issue going to the polls.<\/p>\n<p>He said, according to the agreement, a referendum must be held if it appears that a majority in Northern Ireland want to join a united Ireland.<\/p>\n<p>MEP Kelleher said that the relationship between the Irish and British Governments is strong, but added that Prime Minister Burnham\u2019s recent comments were not acceptable.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"An Ireland South MEP has said the terms of the Good Friday Agreement need to be respected.
