Andrew Garfield\u2019s superhero stint ended with\u00a0The Amazing Spider-Man 2,<\/a>\u00a0which is a whole lot of movie. Already stuffed with plot and villains, Shailene Woodley\u2019s Mary Jane Watson was cut from the film, and it\u2019s something that\u2019s still on her mind.<\/p>\n

In a recent episode of SAG-AFTRA\u2019s Conversations<\/a>, Woodley recalled how becoming Mary Jane wasn\u2019t an audition, just a talk with director Marc Webb. It was a \u201crattling\u201d experience for her, particularly since she\u2019d been auditoning for her roles up to that point. \u201cWhen you audition and get chosen, when you\u2019re on set, there\u2019s zero doubt you\u2019re the right person for that role. When you just get an offer or do a general meeting, it\u2019s more murky,\u201d she said. \u201cI was like, \u2018How do I know that I\u2019m\u00a0who you want, and not just who the studio wants?\u201d<\/p>\n

Despite worries, she was a Spider-Man fan and loved Mary Jane growing up, and playing her was a \u201cdream. When I got it, I was like, \u2018This is so exciting!’\u201d She only filmed a few scenes with Garfield, but she was expected to have a larger role in a third\u00a0Amazing\u00a0movie<\/a>. A year later, she got a \u201cfun phone call\u201d from Sony, who told her the MJ scenes were being snipped<\/a> so she could get a clean intro in the third movie. It\u2019s something Woodley understood, even if she goodnaturedly joked the studio actually regretted casting her.<\/p>\n

We all know what happened next: no\u00a0Amazing Spider-Man 3, and Tom Holland\u2019s currently swinging it up as Spidey with his wife Zendaya playing his MJ. Sony, meanwhile, doesn\u2019t seem keen to try and get Garfield back in the suit like they might\u2019ve after he entered\u00a0<\/a>Spider-Man: No Way Home<\/a>\u00a0to intended applause. It\u2019s something he\u2019s still apparently open to, though, so maybe one day we\u2019ll see how that pairing would\u2019ve fared in the maligned, short-lived universe.<\/p>\n
