Coronation Street’s Dolly Parton storyline continued tonight, amid a shocking development for Celeste Butterfield<\/a> and her family. The newcomer is a huge fan of the late country music icon, and has been planning her own Dolly-themed funeral.<\/p>\n

With episodes often filmed months in advance, Parton’s recent death<\/a> had no bearing on the storyline, with Celeste’s frequent mentions<\/a> of the singer being coincidental. Tonight’s instalment featured another reference, as Celeste finalised the details of her funeral plan.<\/p>\n

The episode began with undertaker Todd Grimshaw<\/a> telling Gemma Winter-Brown that her great aunt was dying. A shocked Gemma rushed to see her mum, Bernie Winter-Alahan, and urged her to make amends with Celeste before it’s too late. <\/p>\n

When Bernie and Kit Green<\/a> both refused, Gemma headed over to the Chariot Square Hotel on her own. She introduced herself to Celeste and shared photos of her kids, though Celeste was less than impressed. <\/p>\n

“I couldn’t think of anything worse. Kids, grown up or whatever, sitting here making it all about them. Crying and wailing at the unfairness of it all. I’m the one who’s pegging it, not them, selfish little so-and-sos,” she reflected when asked if she regretted not having kids. <\/p>\n

As Parton’s popular song ‘Jolene’ played in the background, Celeste revealed that her impending death is caused by hereditary breast cancer. Gemma was then heartbroken, as she discovered that she and her family were at greater risk of developing the illness.<\/p>\n

Later, Gemma went back to Bernie with the sad news, telling her that Celeste had died as she was about to leave the hotel. She explained that the breast cancer was genetic, fearing for herself, Bernie and her two daughters.<\/p>\n

However, upcoming episodes on the ITV soap will actually see Gemma’s half-brother Kit be diagnosed with breast cancer<\/a>, with the issue-based storyline being developed in collaboration with several charities.<\/p>\n

Coronation Street airs on weeknights at 8.30pm on ITV1 and streams on ITVX<\/a>.<\/p>\n
