Perhaps nothing says \u201c2026\u201d like a once-disgraced actor making a comeback in a film that asks questions like: What if a famously nasty, evil rich guy actually had a point? This is what we all have to look forward to this fall with Ebenezer, a new take on A Christmas Carol from Pearl director Ti West and starring Johnny Depp. The film is the subject of a new preview in Entertainment Weekly<\/a> this morning, which very briefly references Depp\u2019s trial with ex-wife Amber Heard before making the case that, sure, Ebenezer Scrooge was \u201can unlikable guy, but there\u2019s a certain sense of humor and charm to it as well,\u201d according to West.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Of course, Ebenezer is Depp\u2019s first big film appearance since a trial centered on whether Heard was legally allowed to say that he beat her. (A judge in the United Kingdom ruled in 2020<\/a> that the allegation that Depp was a \u201cwife beater\u201d was \u201csubstantially true.\u201d) Still, we have to admit we\u2019re a little surprised to see that the film will also be image rehab for the Charles Dickens character, too. \u201cIn other adaptations, Scrooge is kind of an asshole, and then the rest of the characters are benevolent, perfect people. And it was really our goal to try to balance that out to say that there\u2019s much more of a gray area in the story,\u201d West tells EW. \u201cWe want to give Scrooge logic and a good argument, so when he is making an argument about something, he\u2019s not wrong.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

West continues, \u201cAs his Scrooge cuts someone down verbally or as he makes a financial point or withdraws, you do understand why he\u2019s doing it.\u201d For example, how would we have guessed that Scrooge wants Bob Cratchit to work on Christmas because it would net him more money? But as West goes on, it\u2019s hard not to read his comments as applying to both Scrooge and the actor who plays him (an actor that test audiences have already indicated they\u2019re pretty fine with<\/a>). \u201cYou find yourself liking a character that you\u2019re not supposed to on paper, which then brings you as the audience into the movie more because you\u2019re experiencing the movie subjectively as he is, rather than just seeing it as a play,\u201d West says.
