{"id":610483,"date":"2026-08-31T20:10:12","date_gmt":"2026-08-31T20:10:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/610483\/"},"modified":"2026-08-31T20:10:12","modified_gmt":"2026-08-31T20:10:12","slug":"john-galliano-pulls-out-of-2027-met-gala-exhibition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/610483\/","title":{"rendered":"John Galliano pulls out of 2027 Met Gala exhibition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>John Galliano has announced the 2027 Met Gala honouring his career has been cancelled after his past racist and antisemitic comments.<\/p>\n<p>The British fashion designer, 65, had been set to become only the third living designer to be honoured by the museum.<\/p>\n<p>His retrospective had been due to run from May 2027 until January 2028, with the designer also chosen to be the theme of next year\u2019s Met Gala.<\/p>\n<p>However just a month after the exhibition was announced, Galliano has now revealed he has pulled the retrospective while also addressing his past racism controversies.<\/p>\n<p>Posting a statement on Instagram, he wrote: \u201cAfter much reflection and discussion with all those involved, I have decided, with great sadness, that it is best for the exhibition not to take place at this time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI remain fully accountable for the pain caused by my words in the past, particularly the hurt I caused to the Jewish and Asian communities, and I remain deeply sorry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI understand that meaningful atonement is not achieved through an exhibition, institutional recognition or a single public gesture. It is a continuing responsibility, demonstrated through listening, learning and one\u2019s conduct over time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He continued: \u201cI do not want the debate surrounding me to place the Met in a difficult position or to distract from the remarkable work of the Costume Institute. I also recognize and respect that an exhibition honoring my work would be painful for some.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Galliano went on to thank those who have \u201cguided, supported and accompanied\u201d him throughout the last \u201cfifteen years of sobriety and recovery from alcoholism and addiction\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement shared with Vogue, The Metropolitan Museum of Art\u2019s director and chief executive Max Hollein said: \u201cFollowing thoughtful discussions with John Galliano, we have together decided not to proceed with the exhibition.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A statement from Vogue global editorial director Anna Wintour said that Galliano\u2019s decision to ask the museum to postpone the exhibition was \u201cvery courageous and a measure of the man he is\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" height=\"960\" width=\"640\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/john-galliano-pulls-out-of-2027-met-gala-exhibition.jpg\" alt=\"Anna Wintour at The Met Gala in 2026 in New York\" data-title=\"The Met Gala 2026 \u2013 New York\" data-copyright-holder=\"PA Wire\" data-copyright-notice=\"PA Wire\/PA Images\" data-credit=\"Matt Crossick\" data-usage-terms=\"\"\/>Anna Wintour called his decision \u2018very courageous\u2019 (Matt Crossick\/PA)<\/p>\n<p>The statement said: \u201cI believe this is the right decision, and both he and the Museum have my full support. His soaring imagination, fed by a lifetime of curiosity and research, is matched by his exceptional craft. Cut, fit, the evocative line of a bias-cut dress, color \u2013 he\u2019s a master of it all. Without one or the other, if his technique wasn\u2019t equal to his storytelling talents, he wouldn\u2019t be the premiere couturier of his generation. But he most certainly is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Wintour added that Galliano\u2019s impact \u201creverberates across generations\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Galliano was convicted of a hate crime by a French court in 2011 for his public antisemitic comments after he launched an attack on a couple sitting on a cafe terrace following a late-night drinking session in the upmarket Marais district.<\/p>\n<p>Footage later emerged of a separate incident which appeared to show him abusing drinkers in a bar and telling them, \u201cI love Hitler\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The Dior creative director was then sacked by the label in light of the \u201cdeeply offensive statements and conduct\u201d contained in the video.<\/p>\n<p>The designer was later convicted of \u201cpublic insults based on origin, religious affiliation, race or ethnicity\u201d stemming from the two separate incidents and handed a 6,000 euro (\u00a35,000) suspended fine.<\/p>\n<p>He had been set to be just the third living designer to be featured by the Met, following Yves Saint Laurent in 1983 and Rei Kawakubo in 2017, with his exhibition to be titled John Galliano: Horizons.<\/p>\n<p>At the time that his exhibition was announced, Dame Anna said that it \u201cwould not shy away from any of the darkness in John\u2019s past\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" height=\"963\" width=\"640\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/1788207012_26_john-galliano-pulls-out-of-2027-met-gala-exhibition.jpg\" alt=\"British fashion designer John Galliano \" data-title=\"British fashion designer John Galliano \" data-copyright-holder=\"PA Archive\" data-copyright-notice=\"PA Archive\/PA Images\" data-credit=\"Fiona Hanson\" data-usage-terms=\"\"\/>John Galliano was born in Gibraltar but grew up in south London (Fiona Hanson\/PA)<\/p>\n<p>She said: \u201cIt\u2019s part of what has shaped him.
