{"id":610793,"date":"2026-09-01T03:28:14","date_gmt":"2026-09-01T03:28:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/610793\/"},"modified":"2026-09-01T03:28:14","modified_gmt":"2026-09-01T03:28:14","slug":"more-than-160-jobs-at-risk-at-paypals-irish-arm-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/610793\/","title":{"rendered":"More than 160 jobs at risk at Paypal\u2019s Irish arm \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">More than 160 jobs could be at risk at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/paypal\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/paypal\">PayPal <\/a>in Ireland as the company plans to cut back its workforce here. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Almost 12 per cent of the payment company\u2019s 1,380 Irish staff are said to be affected by the move. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The company, which has staff based in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/ireland\/dublin\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/ireland\/dublin\/\">Dublin<\/a> and working remotely across the country, had earlier on Monday confirmed to staff that 33 jobs would go at its business support department. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">However, Sinn F\u00e9in TD <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/ruairi-o-murchu\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/ruairi-o-murchu\/\">Ruair\u00ed \u00d3 Murch\u00fa<\/a> said the company had subsequently said it was looking to cut an additional 131 jobs across a range of departments.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">PayPal has been contacted for comment. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The redundancies are part of a strategy the company announced in April for its global business in a bid to cut costs, simplify operations, remove duplication and clarify reporting lines. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Staff affected by the cuts are expected to leave the company between October 7th and 21st. Enhanced redundancy packages are expected to be offered to workers. \u00d3 Murch\u00fa said it was a \u201cdevastating blow\u201d to staff and the realisation of their \u201cworst fears\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThis is devastating for the workers involved and their families, many of whom have given years of sterling service to PayPal,\u201d he said. \u201cIt is vital that PayPal fully consults with their staff in a meaningful way and puts in place the help and supports that it has promised for those who are affected.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/business\/2026\/08\/31\/consultants-head-for-a-showdown-with-their-own-clients\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Consultants head for a showdown with their own clients as AI upends industryOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The Sinn F\u00e9in TD said that although a staff spokesman said he had been assured the company remained committed to Ireland in the long term, there were concerns about the turbulent few months endured by PayPal, with worries around the impact of AI among the workforce. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The payments company, which was founded in the 1990s, had been at the forefront of digital payments, but has struggled in recent years to modernise its technology. That has allowed rivals to grow their market share. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Last week it emerged a consortium of buyout firm Advent and Irish cofounded Stripe had abandoned plans to bid for PayPal.
