What if you could hear the hidden language of nature? Orchid\u00e9es is a breathtaking concert performance at the Days of Art and Science Festival Leiden by acclaimed Irish composer Nick Roth, in which the 100-million-year-old evolutionary history of orchids is turned into music.<\/p>\n
Performed live by renowned cellist Kate Ellis, the work combines a solo cello with immersive video imagery to reveal the extraordinary beauty contained within the DNA of one of the world’s most diverse families of flowering plants.<\/p>\n
Developed in collaboration with Prof. Barbara Gravendeel (Scientific Director of the Hortus Botanicus Leiden) and orchid specialist Brandon Tam (The Huntington, Los Angeles), Orchid\u00e9es bridges the gap between science, art, and ecology. By translating genetic patterns into sounds, the performance invites the audience to experience evolution as a living composition and to reflect on what orchids can teach us about resilience in a rapidly changing world.<\/p>\n
This special evening takes place in the historic Orangery of the Hortus Botanicus and marks the European premiere of the work. Prior to the performance, Nick Roth and Barbara Gravendeel will take the audience on the remarkable scientific and artistic journey behind the project, offering a unique glimpse into the intersection of biodiversity, music, and imagination.<\/p>\n
