{"id":611128,"date":"2026-09-01T11:18:19","date_gmt":"2026-09-01T11:18:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/611128\/"},"modified":"2026-09-01T11:18:19","modified_gmt":"2026-09-01T11:18:19","slug":"litter-fines-increase-to-e250-from-tuesday-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/611128\/","title":{"rendered":"Litter fines increase to \u20ac250 from Tuesday \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Fines for littering increase from \u20ac150 to \u20ac250 from Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The increase comes as a new fund is set up to support local authorities in keeping public areas, parks, beaches and greenways clean, with a focus on challenges such as dog fouling. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \"> Anti-littering measures seem to be having an effect, with the 2025 National Litter Pollution Monitoring System finding continued improvements  across the State.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The monitoring system\u2019s 2025 survey found 20.6 per cent were classified as unpolluted, up from 19.2 per cent in 2024.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Moderately polluted areas fell significantly from 17.4 per cent to 13.3 per cent. Significantly polluted areas also declined, falling from 3 per cent to 2.6 per cent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The new fund, financed through the Circular Economy Fund, will support local authorities in purchasing additional dog waste bins, bag dispensers and related infrastructure in parks, beaches, greenways and other locations regularly used by dog owners. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A circular will be issued to local authorities with details on how to apply for  funding.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Minister of State with responsibility for the Circular Economy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/alan-dillon\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/alan-dillon\/\">Alan Dillon<\/a> said people are \u201crightly proud of their local communities, but one issue I consistently hear about is litter, including dog fouling\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThis new \u20ac250,000 fund will help local authorities provide additional dog waste bins and related infrastructure where it is needed most,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cWe want to make it easier for responsible dog owners to do the right thing and help keep our parks, beaches and public spaces clean.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThere must be consequences for littering. Those who drop litter impose costs on communities, local authorities and taxpayers.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He said the increase in fines sends \u201ca clear message\u201d that littering is \u201cunacceptable and that the polluter must pay\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cMost people dispose of their waste responsibly,\u201d he said. \u201cIt is unfair that the actions of a small minority can spoil public spaces for everyone else.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Fines for littering increase from \u20ac150 to \u20ac250 from Tuesday.
