Cork U16 football manager Eoin O\u2019Neill says the season just gone has underlined the depth of talent in the county and the commitment of a group who \u201cbought into everything\u201d asked of them.<\/p>\n

It was a demanding programme that stretched from trials to tournaments to the recent Munster final against Limerick, played last Saturday \u2014 a game the Rebels won, 0-12 to 0-10.<\/p>\n

O\u2019Neill and his management team oversaw a panel of around 52 players this year, split into two squads \u2014 Cork Red and Cork White \u2014 after an extensive selection process that began with 120 trialists.<\/p>\n

\u201cA lot of it would be talent identification really,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

“Towards the end of last year, we pulled in 120 players. Eventually, by the end of February, we selected our panel for the year. Behind that number of 52, there is a lot of support from many clubs.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe were very, very competitive in every game this year. We were very happy with how the lads applied themselves.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe got beaten after extra time by Westmeath recently in one of the tournaments. They are one of the best teams in Leinster at the moment at this grade.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

The season culminated in the Munster final against Limerick last weekend, a county O\u2019Neill praised for the quality of their underage structures.<\/p>\n

\u201cLimerick qualified out of the other group, they\u2019re doing an awful lot of work with regards football,\u201d the Aghada clubman says.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey have very capable people involved. Like ourselves, all the other counties are doing the same work \u2014 we just have to keep our standard as high as we possibly can.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“It was nice to finish the season on a high with silverware, but it\u2019s all about developing these lads and getting them ready for what\u2019s to come at minor level in 2027.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

O\u2019Neill\u2019s own involvement at U16 level stems from a desire to contribute to the development pathway at a crucial age.<\/p>\n

Having previously been involved as a Cork senior selector, he stepped into the U16 role to help prepare players for the jump.<\/p>\n

\u201cI just felt I\u2019d like to step back from the top maybe and get fully involved in the underage. They\u2019re coming up to a year before minor, you really know what you have and you want to push on.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe players are very committed. They do a collective gym session every week and every Saturday we\u2019re training with the lads and playing matches accordingly. It\u2019s training, challenge matches, and then into squad games.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s great buy-in from the young guys and their families \u2014 that\u2019s the biggest thing. If they are buying in, you have a chance of success. They buy into the gym side of it, they buy into what we\u2019re doing in training.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have players coming from every part of Cork and we have so many clubs represented. There\u2019s a great bond.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe went to the All-Ireland minor semi-final against Derry up in Dublin after we played a game. The Cork County Board have been very good in providing buses and whatever we need really.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

The minors\u2019 All-Ireland success provided further inspiration. Several U16s trained with the minor squad during the year, giving them a tangible sense of what is achievable.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s attainable \u2014 it\u2019s something they can nearly touch,\u201d O\u2019Neill says.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s very important they can see that is something they can achieve as well. We\u2019re really just keeping an eye and giving feedback, helping them be the best version of themselves.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“It\u2019s competitive, but we have to look at the person as well and make sure they\u2019re happy in the environment.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Looking at Cork football more broadly, O\u2019Neill is optimistic.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve been very competitive in Munster at underage level for the last number of years, the standard is coming up. There\u2019s a lot of work going on behind the scenes. The talent is there, but we have to provide the platform for them to drive on.<\/p>\n
