{"id":611742,"date":"2026-09-02T01:00:28","date_gmt":"2026-09-02T01:00:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/611742\/"},"modified":"2026-09-02T01:00:28","modified_gmt":"2026-09-02T01:00:28","slug":"nonprofit-wants-to-launch-80000-year-mission-to-alpha-centauri-in-2029-video","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/611742\/","title":{"rendered":"Nonprofit wants to launch 80,000-year mission to Alpha Centauri in 2029 (video)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"elk-0cc172b6-a62e-11f1-8f79-cb39a3067eb3\">The first dedicated mission to another star will launch before the end of the decade, if all goes according to plan.<\/p>\n<p>A nonprofit called the Fermi Explorer Mission announced today (Sept. 1) that it plans to send a small probe toward <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18090-alpha-centauri-nearest-star-system.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18090-alpha-centauri-nearest-star-system.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18090-alpha-centauri-nearest-star-system.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Alpha Centauri<\/a> by 2029. But none of us will live to see the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/is-interstellar-travel-possible.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/is-interstellar-travel-possible.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/is-interstellar-travel-possible.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">interstellar spacecraft<\/a>&#8216;s historic arrival; its journey is expected to take about 80,000 years.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We hope to be both the first to leave and the last to arrive at Alpha Centauri,&#8221; Philip Johnston, co-founder and president of the Fermi Explorer Mission, said in a statement today. &#8220;None of us will be here when this journey ends, and that is the point. (Image credit: Fermi Explorer Mission)<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-2f052fc2-a631-11f1-bd6d-51bd8322446e\">Johnston is also co-founder and CEO of Starcloud, a company that plans to <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/technology\/nvidia-gpu-heads-to-space-starcloud-1\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/technology\/nvidia-gpu-heads-to-space-starcloud-1\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/technology\/nvidia-gpu-heads-to-space-starcloud-1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">operate data centers in space<\/a>. He started the Fermi Explorer Mission with fellow Starcloud co-founders Ezra Feilden and Adi Oldean. Former U.S. Air Force officer Garrett Jamison leads day-to-day execution of the project. Some big names in the spaceflight world have signed on as advisors, including former <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/19584-blue-origin-quiet-plans-for-spaceships.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/19584-blue-origin-quiet-plans-for-spaceships.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/19584-blue-origin-quiet-plans-for-spaceships.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Blue Origin<\/a> president Rob Meyerson and Matt Gialich, co-founder and CEO of the asteroid-mining company <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/asteroid-mining-astroforge-docking-mission-2025\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/asteroid-mining-astroforge-docking-mission-2025\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/asteroid-mining-astroforge-docking-mission-2025\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">AstroForge<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-2f052fc2-a631-11f1-bd6d-51bd8322446e-1\">The Fermi Explorer project is ambitious but achievable, according to Johnston and his colleagues. They want to launch a spacecraft to the three-star Alpha Centauri system \u2014 the sun&#8217;s nearest stellar neighbor, at about 4.4 light-years away \u2014 by 2029.<\/p>\n<p>            You may like<\/p>\n<p>This directed trajectory will be a first. Though NASA&#8217;s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17688-voyager-1.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17688-voyager-1.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17688-voyager-1.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Voyager 1<\/a> and <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/voyager-2\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/voyager-2\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/voyager-2\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Voyager 2<\/a> spacecraft are in <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/interstellar-space-definition-explanation\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/interstellar-space-definition-explanation\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/interstellar-space-definition-explanation\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">interstellar space<\/a>, they&#8217;re not headed toward any particular star; rather, they&#8217;re journeying outward on the path they took to complete their &#8220;grand tour&#8221; of <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/7-jupiter-largest-planet-solar-system.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/7-jupiter-largest-planet-solar-system.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/7-jupiter-largest-planet-solar-system.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jupiter<\/a>, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune.<\/p>\n<p>The Fermi Explorer spacecraft will carry at least 2.2 pounds (1 kilogram) of payload, and its entire mission will cost less than $15 million, according to the team. It will also likely employ <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/tech\/electric-spacecraft-propulsion-may-soon-take-a-leap-thanks-to-new-supercomputer\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/tech\/electric-spacecraft-propulsion-may-soon-take-a-leap-thanks-to-new-supercomputer\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/tech\/electric-spacecraft-propulsion-may-soon-take-a-leap-thanks-to-new-supercomputer\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">electric propulsion<\/a>, which is more efficient than traditional chemical thrusters.<\/p>\n<p>Electric propulsion is also a proven system, meaning the Fermi Explorer team isn&#8217;t relying on futuristic tech to travel to the stars. This has been a stumbling block for other interstellar projects, such as the apparently defunct <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/32554-breakthough-starshot-interstellar-alpha-centauri-nanocraft-pictures.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/32554-breakthough-starshot-interstellar-alpha-centauri-nanocraft-pictures.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/32554-breakthough-starshot-interstellar-alpha-centauri-nanocraft-pictures.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Breakthrough Starshot<\/a>, which wanted to blast tiny sailcraft to <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/proxima-centuri-candidate-alien-planet-proxima-c.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/proxima-centuri-candidate-alien-planet-proxima-c.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/proxima-centuri-candidate-alien-planet-proxima-c.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Proxima Centauri<\/a> \u2014 part of the Alpha Centauri system \u2014 using powerful lasers. (That futuristic tech would be great if it worked, however; Breakthrough Starshot aimed to accelerate its nanoprobes to about 20% the speed of light, which equates to a roughly 20-year trip to Proxima Centauri.)<\/p>\n<p>The details \u2014 who will build the spacecraft, for example, and what payloads it will carry \u2014 will be nailed down in the coming months. The project says it already has a proposal from one major satellite manufacturer that comes in under the $15 million cap.<\/p>\n<p>And speaking of money: The Fermi Explorer team wants some financial help getting this mission off the ground.
