Netflix said Tuesday that The One About Matthew Perry will mark the \u201cfirst in-depth, definitive documentary\u201d about the life of the late Friends star, from his storied career as a sitcom actor<\/a> to his personal experiences with addiction. <\/p>\n It will feature never-before-heard testimonies from Perry\u2019s sister Mia Perry Bowick, unreleased footage from the Perry family\u2019s private archive and will hear from his former creative collaborators and lifelong friends, who are set to share \u201ccandid new details on his private struggles.\u201d<\/p>\n Bowick said in a statement that she was finally ready to share memories of her brother\u2019s legacy after he died in October 2023, aged 54.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s taken time for me to feel ready to share these memories and what it was like to love Matthew through all the complexity of his life \u2014 to see him as a whole person, not just as Chandler, and not just as someone who struggled with addiction,\u201d Bowick said.<\/p>\n \u201cAs his sister, he shaped who I am today, the person I strive to be, and the work to which I\u2019ve devoted my life. Matthew had a beautiful heart and a generous spirit, and even in his darkest moments, he could still make you laugh and feel loved,\u201d she continued.<\/p>\n \u201cI hope this series gives everyone who loved him, whether personally or from afar, a deeper appreciation for who he truly was, and the legacy he leaves behind.\u201d<\/p>\n The One About Matthew Perry is directed by Emmy-winning director Mary Robertson, who calls Perry \u201cone of the comedic geniuses of our time.\u201d <\/p>\n \u201cThrough his many films, TV and stage performances, and his unforgettable portrayal of Chandler Bing, he made millions of us laugh, connect, and feel a little less alone,\u201d Robertson said. <\/p>\n \u201cHe also gave us so much more by bravely speaking about addiction. Yet the public only knew part of his story,\u201d the statement continued. \u201cThat\u2019s why we set out to make this series: to let the people who knew and loved Matthew reveal the person behind the public figure.\u201d<\/p>\n The docuseries will premiere on the streaming platform on October 27, the day before the third anniversary of Perry\u2019s death<\/a> on October 28, 2023.<\/p>\n Perry died from an accidental overdose<\/a> caused by the \u201cacute effects\u201d of ketamine, an autopsy revealed<\/a>.<\/p>\n On August 19, the Matthew Perry House \u2014 the foundation set up to honor Perry\u2019s legacy and support people dealing with addiction \u2014 shared a tribute from the late actor\u2019s mother, Suzanne Morrison, on what would have been his 57th birthday.<\/p>\n \u201cAugust 19th. It\u2019s his birthday. Matthew was born 57 years ago today, a day that I feel as keenly as if [it] all happened this very morning,\u201d she wrote. \u201cAlong with all the days he struggled, and the days he hid his addiction from the world, and even from me.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cSweet, loving, funny, cantankerous, pig-headed Matthew, who wanted \u2014 so much \u2014 to be well. I miss him terribly. All the time.
