<\/p>\nIn the quest for greater health and wellness, many of us have already invested in gadgets like sleep and fitness trackers, as tech companies increasingly recognise the money to be made in creating tools to track and tweak our bodily habits.<\/p>\n
But is our growing fascination with ‘healthmaxxing’ a sign that there is an appetite for an AI-powered high-tech toothbrush?<\/p>\n
Dyson is certainly betting on it, as it launches its first-ever toothbrush: the Dyson CameraJet, a Wi-Fi-enabled toothbrush equipped with a camera and powered by AI.<\/p>\n
Known for their home appliances and haircare products, the launch marks Dyson’s first foray into the wellness industry, and it brings with it a host of new and impressive ways to optimise a previously mundane task – and possibly frighten yourself in the process.<\/p>\n

Coming in at just shy of \u20ac500, it certainly promises a lot: the CameraJet cleans, flosses and even sprays tiny jets of mouthwash.<\/p>\n
Not only that, it takes 28 live images per second while brushing to identify and monitor gaps between teeth. For the morbidly curious, you can then connect the toothbrush to an app which will give the user a report and suggest fixes to improve your dental health.<\/p>\n
Does this signal the end of the humble bristled toothbrush?<\/p>\n
Dr Will Rymer, general dentist in Roscrea, says that dentists are “very excited about it” but concedes that it “looks a little bit like something out of [Marvel character] Tony Stark’s bathroom”.<\/p>\n
“Where they’ve started from is really interesting”, he explains. “They’ve identified that the water flosser, which is a relatively new product to market, is a bit on the weak side, and maybe it’s not doing the job that it advertises it can do.<\/p>\n
“So they’ve amped it up, increased the velocity, reduced the volume of water to clean up a lot of the mess, and then they’ve decided, well, we’ve all these other devices. We’ve electric toothbrushes, sonic brushes, the water [flosser]; why can’t we just combine them?”<\/p>\n
He adds that the toothbrush uses AI to identify gaps in the teeth, and then “teaches” the user to clean them better.<\/p>\n
“We quite like the concept”, he says of other dentists, but adds that he wouldn’t recommend it to a patient until he knew for certain it was safe and effective.<\/p>\n

“My [inner] geek is really, really excited, but my professional persona means I have to be a little bit cautious. Innovation gives us great possibility, but the evidence is going to tell us whether that translates into better healthcare.”<\/p>\n
Rymer adds that he has used photos and videos as tools to explain good dental hygiene to patients “for years” and has seen the “transformational” results for some people. “They can see it, they understand the behaviour changes.” However, he notes that not everyone responds in the same way to this.<\/p>\n
With such a hefty price tag, this will not be an accessible buy for most shoppers, and Rymer highlights that this is usually the case for the “patient who would benefit from it most”.<\/p>\n
The expense doesn’t stop with just the toothbrush either: replacement toothbrush heads will cost \u20ac30 for two, while new Dyson mouthwashes and toothpastes will start at \u20ac9.99 each.<\/p>\n
Why do you need a specific toothpaste for this brush, you ask? Because they are non-foaming, which allows the integrated camera to pick up all your dental quirks and issues. Of course, this means that other toothpastes will not work with the CameraJet.<\/p>\n
“I think it will end up being quite an expensive way of brushing your teeth”. Rymer says. “But for some people it’s going to be a great motivator.”<\/p>\n
