Open Mike Eagle & Kenny Segal – DOOMED!<\/p>\n Open Mike Eagle and Kenny Segal have been circling each other for almost twenty years, two LA transplants who found their footing in the Project Blowed orbit without ever making a full-length together. That changes with DOOMED!, a fifteen-track breakup record released via Backwoodz Studioz on August 14, 2026. We have followed OME since 2014\u2019s Dark Comedy, with Brick Body Kids Still Daydream (2017) remaining our favorite. DOOMED! tops 2025\u2019s Neighborhood Gods Unlimited for us, thanks largely to Segal\u2019s production, which perfectly complements OME\u2019s writing. Segal has repeatedly elevated the artists he works with, and that same alchemy is evident here.<\/p>\n The premise is simple: five years of relationship wreckage compressed into forty-one minutes of absurdist but heartfelt rap. DOOMED! expands its definition of a breakup. Romantic separation becomes the collapse of a shared reality: friendships fracture, career momentum stalls, and even the therapist gets fired. The title track turns this chain reaction into a dark punchline.<\/p>\n Segal sets the tone with \u201cOut to Lunch,\u201d a woozy, tape-saturated beat that sounds lived-in. His restrained production stays grounded in muted jazz textures, worn samples, and live drums while OME\u2019s thoughts spiral. Members of Human Error Club add further texture.<\/p>\n The album\u2019s details make its heartbreak convincing. \u201cStreets of Rage: Public Arguments Edition\u201d features Gothic Tropic and turns everyday disputes into mythology. billy woods guests on \u201cShe Swear I\u2019m Colorblind,\u201d while \u201cUnfinished Concrete Initials\u201d features Hemlock Ernst in a bruised reflection on memory and relationships. \u201cWe should have taken more photos\u201d captures the fear of memories already slipping away.<\/p>\n OME\u2019s humor remains central. On \u201cDon\u2019t Go Look,\u201d he would rather tongue-kiss a bug zapper than check his ex\u2019s social media. Elsewhere, abandoned TV shows, anime, and shared Marvel obsessions become reminders of routines that no longer exist.<\/p>\n The final stretch grows increasingly bleak. \u201cSweetheart Jail\u201d compares cohabiting after a breakup to imprisonment, while \u201cWatching a Movie Called Freedom by Myself\u201d accepts that some relationships end without offering neat closure.<\/p>\n For anyone who has experienced a difficult breakup, DOOMED! may be OME\u2019s most relatable work. Heartfelt, funny, devastating, and consistently inventive, it pairs some of his best writing with Segal\u2019s richly atmospheric production.<\/p>\n Release date: August 14, 2026.<\/p>\n 2. Rapsody – God Gotta Afro & Gold Hoops<\/p>\n Rapsody has built one of the strongest discographies in modern Hip Hop, with Laila\u2019s Wisdom (2017) remaining her absolute masterpiece in our eyes. Laila\u2019s Wisdom (2012) and Eve (2019) come close in brilliance. Please Don\u2019t Cry (2024), while solid enough, was the first Rapsody album we weren\u2019t too crazy about. With God Gotta Afro & Gold Hoops, she is back on that top tier though.<\/p>\n Across 16 tracks and an hour, Rapsody expands her palette without sacrificing the dense writing that made her name. Denaun Porter handles the bulk of the production, bringing soulful drums, funk, live-feeling grooves and room for the songs to breathe. Madlib\u2019s contribution to \u201cThe Peejaays\u201d is immediately recognizable, while \u201cPretty Bird \/ Way U R\u201d and \u201cJoyful\u201d push the record into more spacious and rhythmically varied territory.<\/p>\n The album\u2019s ideas are deeply personal. Rapsody digs into Black identity, spirituality, family history, aging and the complicated relationship between culture and capitalism. \u201cBlack Is Beautiful\u201d traces those ideas through her own bloodline, while \u201cBlack Love\u201d connects incarceration, family and community. \u201cNo Way\u201d finds her aiming for media platforms that have profited from Hip Hop while questioning who gets to control the culture.<\/p>\n The guest list adds color. George Clinton brings Afrofuturist energy to \u201cOMG! (Love to Sun Ra),\u201d Malice drops a sharp verse on \u201cBlack Love,\u201d and South African vocalist KARABO YA MORENA appears on the title track. \u201cJoyful,\u201d featuring Nomisupasta, turns toward dance, spirituality and the idea of joy as resistance.<\/p>\n The closing \u201cAct II: Bloodline \/ Growing Older\u201d is especially affecting, with Amber Navran\u2019s vocals surrounding Rapsody\u2019s reflections on her mother, family and the passage of time. God Gotta Afro & Gold Hoops has the ambition, writing and musical range we expect from Rapsody at her best. This fifth album belongs in that conversation.<\/p>\n Release date: August 21, 2026.<\/p>\n 3. CZARFACE & Frankie Pulitzer – CZARFACE Meets Frankie Pulitzer<\/p>\n CZARFACE Meets Frankie Pulitzer sounds like a novelty on paper: actor Tom Hardy stepping into a full CZARFACE album, but it plays like the real thing. Fifteen tracks, handmade boom-bap, comic-book grit, and three MCs trading bars with genuine chemistry.<\/p>\n CZARFACE has been a Boston-New York unit since 2013: 7L & Esoteric linked with Wu-Tang\u2019s Inspectah Deck, and their catalog, including standout collabs with MF DOOM and Kool Keith, has stayed consistently strong. Hardy\u2019s rap history predates his acting fame; he recorded as Tommy No 1 in the late \u201990s before resurfacing as Frankie Pulitzer (aka FacePuller) on prior CZARFACE cuts. This is his first full-length as a (co-)lead MC.<\/p>\n The Czar-Keys (7L & Spada4) handle all production, sticking to their formula of dusty breaks, comic-sourced audio snippets, and cinematic synths that never feel machine-made. Guest spots elevate the record: Busta Rhymes turns up the intensity on \u201cRaw Forever,\u201d Method Man joins Deck for a Wu-Tang reunion on \u201cMad Technology,\u201d El-P brings sharp cultural commentary to \u201cDragon Cannon,\u201d and Kendra Morris offers a melodic breather on \u201cFrankie.\u201d<\/p>\n Hardy leans on film and literary references, Scorsese, King, a surprising Kathy Bates line, without overdoing it, and his Bane-voiced Shakespeare recitation on \u201cGrim-Visaged War\u201d somehow works. Deck stays grounded in grind-and-receipts realism; Esoteric adds self-aware reflection on obsession and craft. A throughline about respecting the work and getting paid for it runs across cuts like \u201cDragon Cannon\u201d and \u201cPaul Bufano Type Beat.\u201d<\/p>\n At 47 minutes, the album is tight, purposeful, and cohesive. Deck and Eso anchor it, and Hardy earns his spot rather than riding on star power. A genuine addition to CZARFACE\u2019s run of strong collaborative records. Real Hip Hop for real heads.<\/p>\n Release date: August 28, 2026.<\/p>\n 4. Queen Herawin & PA. Dre – DOTOM: Death Of The Old Me<\/p>\n Queen Herawin, best known as a member of The Juggaknots, returns with D.O.T.O.M. (Death Of The Old Me), a deeply personal album that feels like a genuine new beginning. Herawin and her brother Breeze Brewin helped make The Juggaknots\u2019 Clear Blue Skies (1996) a cult classic of underground New York Hip Hop, and her dense, poetic style remains fully intact here. This time, she joins forces with producer PA. Dre for her strongest work in years.<\/p>\n The album breathes quality from top to bottom. PA. Dre supplies a beautifully varied backdrop, moving between smooth, soulful passages, moody instrumentation, and straight boom-bap without ever disrupting the album\u2019s flow. Herawin sounds completely at home over these beats, whether exploring self-doubt and transformation or reflecting on relationships, legacy, and survival.<\/p>\n \u201cDiver\u201d with Helixx C. Armageddon dives deep into self-examination, while \u201cTorch\u201d reunites Herawin with Breeze Brewin for some classic Juggaknots chemistry. \u201cBig O\u201d with Tef Poe and the intimate \u201cFever\u201d add warmth to the album, while \u201cManifesto\u201d brings Ruste Juxx into the mix for a more traditional Hip Hop workout. \u201cTogether,\u201d featuring Rhymefest, examines legacy and what remains after the music stops.<\/p>\n The closing \u201cPhoenix\u201d is particularly moving, serving as a heartfelt farewell to Herawin\u2019s late mother. It brings the album\u2019s central idea of shedding the past and moving forward full circle.<\/p>\n D.O.T.O.M. is a beautifully crafted return from an underground Hip Hop veteran. Herawin sounds focused, reflective, and reinvigorated, while PA. Dre provides the ideal musical setting. From the first track to the last, this is a cohesive, soulful, and thoroughly Hip Hop record.<\/p>\n Release date: August 28, 2026.<\/p>\n 5. A-F-R-O – Trap Door 2<\/p>\n A-F-R-O returns with Trap Door 2, a sprawling 20-track sequel to last December\u2019s Trap Door and another reminder of why he remains one of the most exciting lyricists in underground Hip Hop. Clocking in at over 75 minutes, the album is packed with intricate rhyme patterns, rapid-fire flows, dark humor, and theatrical storytelling, all backed by production handled entirely by A-F-R-O himself.<\/p>\n The beats are a major strength. A-F-R-O digs deep into the boom-bap tradition while keeping the sound lively enough to support the enormous cast of guests. There is no shortage of impressive collaborations, with Bishop Lamont, Wordsworth, Terror Van Poo, Jon Connor, Blu, Blaq Poet, Sevin Soprano, 60 East, H3RO, YaH-Ra, MC Wicks, and many others joining the party. Despite the crowded tracklist, the guests generally complement rather than overshadow A-F-R-O.<\/p>\n There is plenty of variety across the lengthy runtime, from intricate posse cuts to skits and more atmospheric moments, while scratches from A-F-R-O, DJ E-Dub, Mando the DJ, and DJ Ace the Cut Lieutenant reinforce its traditionalist Hip Hop character. \u201cBarb Wire\u201d with Blaq Poet and the stacked \u201cCaptain Now\u201d are particular highlights.<\/p>\n Trap Door 2 is unapologetically rooted in the fundamentals: sharp rhymes, inventive beats, scratches, and MCs going for broke. A dope follow-up to Trap Door, this is pure Hip Hop.<\/p>\n Release date: August 28, 2026.<\/p>\n 6. Kool Keith & Mike Redman – Sonic Psychosis<\/p>\n Kool Keith has been one of our favorite Hip Hop artists ever. His near-total absence from \u201cbest ever<\/a>\u201d discussions is a serious fault of Hip Hop followers. From the Ultramagnetic MCs and Critical Beatdown to Dr. Octagonecologyst, Sex Style, First Come, First Served, and his many alter egos, Keith has spent four decades doing things his own way. His huge discography has its share of misses, though he has released more great albums<\/a> than most artists ever manage.<\/p>\n His recent output has been mixed, with plenty of interesting, mostly obscure releases. Middi Magazine with Emperor Middi was quite dope earlier this year, while 2024\u2019s Stress Eater with CZARFACE was another highlight. The 2023 combination of Black Elvis 2 and Serpent was especially strong, with Serpent arguably his best album of the past decade. Sonic Psychosis feels like his most substantial release since then.<\/p>\n A big reason is Mike Redman. The Rotterdam producer handles virtually the entire album, creating a consistent musical world of heavy drums, strange samples, industrial textures, scratches and futuristic details. The pairing works exceptionally well. Keith has plenty of room for his fractured rhyme patterns, bizarre imagery and stream-of-consciousness writing, while Redman keeps the production cohesive across all 13 tracks.<\/p>\n The guest list is excellent too. Ras Kass, Killah Priest, Del the Funky Homosapien, Craig G, Sadat X, Mr. Lif, Young Zee and Chuck D all contribute, alongside DJ Shadow, DJ Lord and Trackstar the DJ. \u201cTraveling Through Time\u201d with Del is a natural meeting of eccentric minds, while \u201cSonic Psychosis\u201d finally puts Chuck D and Keith together on record.<\/p>\n What really separates Sonic Psychosis from many recent Keith releases is the care put into the whole project. Nothing sounds rushed or half-finished. The production has a clear identity, the sequencing works, and Keith remains as unpredictable as ever. We might like Kool Keith more than you do, but Sonic Psychosis makes it harder to underappreciate him.<\/p>\n Release date: August 28, 2026.<\/p>\n 7. B-Movie Millionaires – It Made Sense At The Time<\/p>\n It Made Sense At The Time is the second full-length from B-Movie Millionaires, bringing together two of the UK underground\u2019s most distinctive voices, Lee Scott and Black Josh. Nearly a decade after their previous album, the duo return with 13 tracks of grimy boom-bap, surreal humor, bleak observations, and the kind of off-kilter writing that has long defined the Blah Records orbit.<\/p>\n The chemistry between Scott and Josh remains excellent. They trade verses naturally, whether dissecting everyday dysfunction, indulging in absurdity, or turning their own shortcomings into punchlines. ICL, SOZ, and MED establish the album\u2019s murky, eccentric tone, while 316 and REX push further into darker territory. SMH is particularly revealing, with Scott reflecting on family, grief, instability, and the unconventional path that brought him here.<\/p>\n The production, handled by King Kashmere, Spectacular Diagnostics, Scott, Hush One, and Sniff, keeps things varied without losing the album\u2019s dusty character. Spectacular Diagnostics supplies much of the album\u2019s cavernous sound, while Scott\u2019s own beats add a more subdued touch. Guests including Quelle Chris, Nickelus F, Sly Moon, and King Grubb fit comfortably into the strange little world these two create.<\/p>\n There is plenty of weirdness here, yet it never feels forced. It Made Sense At The Time is a distinctly British underground rap album with personality to spare, and one of the more enjoyable UK Hip Hop releases of 2026.<\/p>\n Release date: August 14, 2026.<\/p>\n 8. Ice T – Criminal Migraine<\/p>\n Ice-T is one of our favorite rappers of all time, and we ranked him high on our Best Rappers Of All Time list<\/a>. We caught plenty of flak for that ranking, but some people seem to underestimate Ice-T\u2019s significance to Hip Hop. A true pioneer and one of the culture\u2019s elder statesmen, Ice-T helped lay the foundation for West Coast gangsta rap. His 1986 track \u201c6 N the Mornin\u2019<\/a>\u201d is widely regarded as one of the sparks that ignited the West Coast gangsta rap explosion, inspiring a generation of rappers including Eazy-E and Ice Cube.<\/p>\n What set Ice-T apart was his authenticity and depth. He never shied away from the realities of street life, while his lyrics also acknowledged its consequences. His music was hard and uncompromising, yet intelligence and humor gave it a dimension beyond simple glorification of violence. His first four albums\u2014Rhyme Pays (1987), Power (1988), The Iceberg (1989), and O.G. Original Gangster (1991)\u2014are all classics and remain in regular rotation here at HHGA. He may not be the most technically gifted rapper ever, but few artists have been more important to Hip Hop\u2019s history.<\/p>\n Which brings us to Criminal Migraine. It is great to see one of Hip Hop\u2019s GOATs release an album at 68 and remind everyone that age is just a number. His first solo Hip Hop studio album in 20 years, the 24-track project delivers hard-hitting West Coast gangsta rap, pimp-rap game, and veteran wisdom. Most importantly, the Ice-T we know is still here. He sounds as authentic as ever.<\/p>\n Is it as good as O.G. Original Gangster? Of course not. Few albums could compete with one of Hip Hop\u2019s greatest. Is it any good? Absolutely. We rate it above the three albums Ice-T released between Home Invasion (1993) and this one. We do not love every beat\u2014some are too clean or trap-oriented for our tastes\u2014and a couple of hooks fail to connect, but overall the album has a strong vibe.<\/p>\n The production comes from Charlemagne, PA. Dre, longtime collaborator Afrika Islam, DaeOne, Mad Rome, Godfather, Stone Paxton, Freddie Foxxx, and others. The feature roster includes Treach, Smoothe Da Hustler, Ras Kass, Murkemz, Money Reeks, Freddie Foxxx, Coco, and Big Bub.<\/p>\n Our favorite joints include the menacing title track, \u201cYou Can Get It,\u201d \u201cFollow The Leader,\u201d \u201cShut The F Up,\u201d \u201cBangerz\u201d with Freddie Foxxx, and the reflective \u201cNo Regrets.\u201d The excellent bonus \u201c6 In The Morning PSK\u201d is a fitting nod to Schoolly D\u2019s \u201cPSK What Does It Mean,\u201d the song Ice-T has long cited as inspiration for \u201c6 N Tha Mornin\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n Ice-T has always argued that Hip Hop has no age limit, and Criminal Migraine backs him up. We consider it one of his strongest albums since Home Invasion. This is not just nostalgia talking. Ice-T has earned his flowers, and Criminal Migraine is another reminder of why.<\/p>\n Release date: August 17, 2026.\u00a0<\/p>\n 9. Ransom – The Price Of Clarity<\/p>\n Ransom has spent years building one of the most respected catalogs in underground Hip Hop, mostly through producer-driven EPs and collabs. The Price Of Clarity marks his first proper solo full-length since 2022\u2019s No Rest for the Wicked, a seventeen-track statement that leans hard on his pen game and conceptual depth. At 46, he raps with the weight of a man who has seen enough to know the difference between fame and substance.<\/p>\n The album opens with \u201cIgnorance Was Bliss\u201d before \u201cThe Prime Example\u201d aims caricatures chasing applause. \u201cGood Mournings\u201d shifts into soulful territory, questioning why he should risk anything for people who fed sharks. Nick Grant delivers a devastating verse on \u201cSorry My Love,\u201d apologizing to a dying sister and an addict mother. Freeway and Young Chris link up on \u201cThe Coldest Winter,\u201d while Lloyd Banks does the most with the least room on the piano-driven \u201cCircumvention.\u201d<\/p>\n Ransom\u2019s lyrics carry the project. He reflects on aging, fatherhood, and the traps of his younger self on \u201cRicher Prior Life\u201d and \u201cSwan Song.\u201d The production, handled by various beatmakers including Nicholas Craven and The Heatmakerz, stays functional but never rises to the level of his recent collaborative work. Some tracks feel flat compared to the sharpness of his writing. Still, this is Ransom. His multis, chess metaphors, and street narratives keep The Price Of Clarity firmly in the quality Hip Hop lane, even if the instrumentals do not always match his intensity.<\/p>\n Release date: August 19, 2026.<\/p>\n \n HONORABLE MENTIONS\n <\/p>\n Inspectah Deck & PA. Dre – Dragon’s Breath<\/p>\n Inspectah Deck has always been Wu-Tang\u2019s best lyricist in our book. From the early Clan records through his solo catalog and CZARFACE, his pen has remained remarkably consistent. Dragon\u2019s Breath gives him 19 tracks and over an hour to prove it again, with PA. Dre handling the production throughout.<\/p>\n The beats lean heavily into dusty boom-bap, grimy drums, ominous samples and soulful touches. At its best, the production gives Deck exactly what he needs: space for tightly packed verses and those sideways details that make his writing so memorable. \u201cThe System\u201d is a standout, turning away from pure braggadocio to examine Deck\u2019s own history, the people who came up around him and the complicated economics of survival. \u201cFunny Style\u201d goes even deeper, turning an old grudge into a detailed street story rather than a generic diss.<\/p>\n There is plenty of classic Wu flavor. Raekwon joins Deck, Sauce Money and Skyzoo on \u201cNever Fold,\u201d Cappadonna appears on \u201cPossession,\u201d and \u201cShaolin Rebel 2\u201d revisits a familiar part of Deck\u2019s mythology. Elsewhere, the guest list reads like a roll call of contemporary underground lyricists. Ransom, Mickey Factz, RJ Payne, Eto, KXNG Crooked, Flee Lord, Hus Kingpin, Sa-Roc, Che Noir, Bahamadia and 7xvethegenius all get their turns.<\/p>\n That abundance is also the album\u2019s main weakness. We like long-form Hip Hop albums, though 19 tracks and dozens of guests occasionally weigh Dragon\u2019s Breath down. Some of PA. Dre\u2019s production also lacks the consistency Deck\u2019s writing deserves, with several tracks falling into a similar mid-tempo pocket.<\/p>\n Still, there is a lot to admire here. Deck sounds hungry, technically sharp and completely at home. Dragon\u2019s Breath ranks among his best solo albums, even if a tighter tracklist might have made the impact considerably stronger.<\/p>\n Release date: August 7, 2026.<\/p>\n The Musalini & 9th Wonder – The Don and Eye 3: The Trilogy<\/p>\n The Musalini and 9th Wonder bring their The Don & Eye trilogy to a close with The Don & Eye 3: The Trilogy, another strong pairing between the Bronx MC\u2019s luxurious street-rap style and 9th Wonder\u2019s soulful production. His dusty samples, understated jazz elements, and crisp boom-bap drums give Musalini plenty of room to operate without overwhelming his laid-back delivery.<\/p>\n \u201cMusallini\u2019s Stroll\u201d opens the album before LE$ joins \u201cLay Low\u201d for a funky exchange of confident bars. \u201cTwo Letters\u201d moves into soulful territory, while \u201cShrimp Lo Mein\u201d brings tougher drums and reflections on the sacrifices behind Musalini\u2019s lifestyle. Swank, Silent Snipers, and Sweata contribute to \u201cCan You Stand the Rain,\u201d adding a memorable hook to one of the album\u2019s smoother cuts.<\/p>\n The album continues to shift between street narratives, romance, and reflections on success. \u201cGame Cold\u201d offers reassurance to a partner, while \u201cPocket Full\u201d centers on finding common ground with a woman. \u201cOff the Books\u201d provides a more relaxed moment, followed by \u201cMemories,\u201d where Heather Victoria\u2019s vocals complement Musalini\u2019s thoughts about someone who continues appearing in his dreams.<\/p>\n The second half maintains the luxurious atmosphere. \u201cSalt Box\u201d addresses balance, \u201cPretty Lady\u201d reunites Musalini with Swank over pitched-up soul, and \u201cOwe It All\u201d incorporates jazzier textures. King Draft joins \u201cCar Keys,\u201d while \u201cFast Life\u201d salutes hustlers making moves. Later, Eli Tha Don appears on \u201cCapital Grille,\u201d \u201cLive From Tokyo\u201d takes Musalini to Japan, and Smoke DZA and Really Jaewon join \u201cPremium Plush.\u201d \u201cTime Travels\u201d closes the album with a soulful farewell.<\/p>\n Musalini always does the same thing, and he stays consistent in his lane here. This feels like a significant project for him, though \u2013 a proper full-length at over 50 minutes, and the production is perfect for his luxury rhymes. A project that will grow on you.<\/p>\n Release date: August 14, 2026.<\/p>\n Mike D – Thank You<\/p>\n It feels strange to call Thank You a Hip Hop album. Mike D, the last remaining Beastie Boy, barely raps here, instead favoring mumbled vocals, singing, electronic textures, live instrumentation, and restless rhythms. Still, given his enormous importance to Hip Hop history, there was never any question we would include his first solo album here.<\/p>\n Released 14 years after the passing of Adam Yauch, Thank You is not an attempt to recreate the Beastie Boys sound, and that is exactly how it should be. Mike D has clearly chosen to explore new territory, working alongside his sons Skyler and Davis Diamond and their 5D band. The result is an experimental, genre-bending record that incorporates electronic music, funk, punk, psych-rock, and oddball beat constructions.<\/p>\n \u201cSwitch Up\u201d immediately establishes the album\u2019s unpredictable character, while \u201cWhat We Got\u201d and \u201cTrue Colors\u201d balance melodic vocals with increasingly unusual production. \u201cSecrets Part I\u201d and \u201cSecrets Part II\u201d stretch into atmospheric territory, and \u201cCrypto\u201d turns digital-age absurdity into an industrial stomper. Elsewhere, \u201cHere We Are\u201d and \u201cBack to Start\u201d reveal a more reflective side of Diamond, touching on mental overload, aging, and the strange state of modern life.<\/p>\n At first, Thank You can be difficult to pin down. It is weird, occasionally chaotic, and certainly not what anyone expecting another Beastie Boys record will want. Give it time, though, because this is an album that grows with repeated listens. Forty years into his career, Mike D sounds less interested in nostalgia than in seeing where his music can go next.
