The US war with Iran is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/09\/01\/middleeast\/us-military-strikes-iran\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">heating up again,<\/a> driving up US defense spending and the cost of oil, gasoline, diesel and jet fuel.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmtka86g2002j3b6rqu9bnjsr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            That energy spike is reinforcing inflation worries in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/09\/01\/investing\/global-bond-market\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">bond market already nervous<\/a> about America\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/08\/23\/economy\/national-debt-40-trillion\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">$40 trillion mountain of debt<\/a>. The yield on the benchmark 10-year Treasury, which is a measure of how much the US government pays to borrow more money, climbed on Wednesday to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/09\/02\/investing\/bond-market-stocks-ai\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">highest level in nearly three years.<\/a>\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmtka86g2002k3b6rfuesxgfq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The bond market stress will make it more expensive for consumers to get a mortgage, for businesses to borrow and for Washington to pay the bills.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmtka86g2002l3b6r5sae0ada@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The risk is that this situation morphs into a doom loop, where the more the war intensifies, the more it will spook the bond market and slow the economy and stocks.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmtka86g2002m3b6rqa11ui27@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIt feels like there is no end to the inflation problem, the war or the deficit in the near term,\u201d said Hardika Singh, economic strategist at Fundstrat, an investment research firm.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmtka86g2002o3b6ribgrjsso@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The stock market gets most of the headlines, but the real power lies in the bond market. And bond market investors around the world have not been shy about flexing their muscles this summer.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmtka86g2002p3b6ryltedstq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In Germany, the 10-year yield recently hit levels unseen since 2011. The UK\u2019s 30-year yield hit its highest since 1998. Since the US government has always paid its debts, the closer the US 10-year gets to 5%, the harder it is to justify buying tech stocks with historically high valuations that might come down.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmtka86g2002r3b6r285kko2s@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            When President Donald Trump shocked the world in late February by striking Iran, US officials stressed the conflict would be short, measured in weeks, not months.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmtka86g2002s3b6r47k8krjz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But now the war has dragged out for more than six months, disrupting the flow of energy out of the most critical supply region in the world. That\u2019s forced investors to reprice energy, inflation and bonds.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmtka86g2002u3b6raygc4dle@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Workarounds \u2013 including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/08\/22\/business\/oil-strait-of-hormuz-iran\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">sneaking oil tankers out of the Persian Gulf<\/a> and China slashing its oil imports \u2013 have limited the damage. But the damage still exists.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmtka86g2002v3b6rvony6adh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Last month was the most expensive August for gas prices in US history, according to AAA. Diesel, a crucial fuel for the economy, has spiked 51% since the war started.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmtka86g2002w3b6rutudaexd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The longer the war lasts, the more it will push up already-elevated inflation and bond yields.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmtka86g2002x3b6rmikni4km@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThis becomes a circular argument unless and until there is a credible way to get out of this war,\u201d said Art Hogan, chief market strategist at B. Riley Wealth Management.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmtka86g2002y3b6rts56h875@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Investors suspect the Federal Reserve will seriously have to consider raising rates at its policy meeting later this month. Even Fed Chairman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/08\/28\/business\/fed-chairman-kevin-warsh-jackson-hole\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Kevin Warsh sounds more open<\/a> to acting soon.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmtka86g2002z3b6r4n99i4jl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe bond market can stop panicking when the Fed starts panicking,\u201d said Hogan. \u201cIf the Fed shows they\u2019re willing to start this battle with inflation, perhaps Treasury yields will cool off.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmtka86g200313b6r4t8qrrft@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Another problem for the bond market: Wars cost money \u2013 and those costs are typically not budgeted for.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmtka86g200323b6r4s2z9afg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The conflict with Iran is costing the United States billions of dollars in additional defense spending, forcing yet more borrowing.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmtka86g200333b6rx5pdzj5s@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Again, this is a global phenomenon.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmtka86g200343b6rate3dsii@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Europe, Japan, and South Korea have all ramped up their defense spending due to various global threats.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmtka86g200353b6r0kx9w3o0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cSadly, it looks like the world has entered a new set of forever wars \u2013 and that\u2019s very expensive,\u201d said David Kelly, chief global strategist at JPMorgan Asset Management.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmtka86g200373b6rdd1f7l0f@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Higher bond yields typically slow the economy by raising the cost of capital.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmtka86g300383b6ryyadl2zj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Corporations have to pay more in interest for every factory they want to open. Small businesses are facing higher loan costs when they\u2019re considering expansion.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmtka86g300393b6rrayffmj2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Washington itself is hurt by higher interest on the national debt, which last month hit $40 trillion for the first time ever.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmtka86g3003a3b6r2elknvsk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The United States has <a href=\"https:\/\/fiscaldata.treasury.gov\/americas-finance-guide\/federal-spending\/#spending-categories\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">spent $931 billion on net interest<\/a> so far this fiscal year alone, well ahead of the $804 billion spent on the national defense, according to Treasury.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/ap25282739605503.jpg\" alt=\"The Treasury Department building is seen on March 13, 2025, in Washington.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1333\" width=\"2000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmtka86g3003b3b6rus1kg6ps@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Over the next decade, US net spending on interest is expected to surpass $16 trillion, according to the Peter G. Peterson Foundation, a fiscal watchdog group. That\u2019s roughly triple the amount of credit card, student debt and car loans <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorkfed.org\/microeconomics\/hhdc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Americans owe.<\/a>\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmtka86g3003c3b6rt0eg6iot@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThat is a conservative estimate, and those costs could be higher if rates rise further,\u201d the Peterson Foundation wrote in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pgpf.org\/article\/bond-market-movements-point-to-growing-fiscal-risks\/?utm_campaign=PGPF%20Newsletters&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;_hsenc=p2ANqtz--DaQOrY9oxeW6spKl9mfd64Q2LjSO89hwfvSTo4FNlksJeemdpe6KNll2WzqyCF0W_7Gzqxz1EnlB4PK54h9PNr3_CwQ&amp;_hsmi=437120562&amp;utm_content=437120562&amp;utm_source=hs_email\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">report<\/a> on Wednesday.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmtka86g3003d3b6r6pmeuuhk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Uncle Sam faces also new competition on the borrowing front from companies pouring money into artificial intelligence infrastructure.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmtka86g3003e3b6rvh7v6sap@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Tech companies are spending trillions of dollars to build out the expensive AI boom, as they put up data centers all over the world \u2013 and much of that is being financed through the bond market, crowding out Washington\u2019s own borrowing needs.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmtka86g3003g3b6r46ejkq3d@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Bond rates got so high last month that Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/08\/19\/investing\/bond-market-treasury-bessent\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">surprised the market with a controversial intervention<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmtka86g3003h3b6rin7e423m@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            His plan \u2013 promising to at least double Treasury buybacks \u2013 worked, but only for a few hours. The bond sell-off quickly resumed, with rates surpassing pre-intervention levels.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmtka86g3003i3b6r59iksoru@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIt massively flopped,\u201d said Fundstrat\u2019s Singh. \u201cIf anything, this may have made the problem worse. Bessent showed his hand. To investors, it was like, \u2018Oh my gosh, he\u2019s worried. We should be too.\u2019\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmtka86g3003j3b6r26wgqgyj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            JPMorgan\u2019s Kelly said Bessent\u2019s intervention has not been effective because it did nothing to change the structural problem of sky-high deficits.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmtka86g3003k3b6r88jganya@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIt\u2019s just moving around a bunch of borrowed money. That\u2019s not going to move the needle,\u201d said Kelly. \u201cUnless they can find a way to truly change the trajectory on our debt, the government is powerless to stop this. We\u2019ve maxed out the credit cards.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmtka86g3003l3b6r7wogiev7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Kelly doubts that even a modest decline in oil prices will be a game-changer for the bond market because of the sheer amount of borrowing that\u2019s required.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmtka86g3003m3b6r2kbl3o19@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe only fool-proof way to get a major bond market rally is to have a massive recession,\u201d he said. \u201cThat would do it.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Yellow lights are flashing in the most important market on the planet: The US bond market.
