The car had several occupants.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The incident occurred at a user-operated crossing about a 1km outside the town.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cOur thoughts are with everyone affected by today\u2019s incidents,\u201d the rail operator said in a post on X. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cWe\u2019ll continue to do our best to provide clear and timely updates as info becomes available. A sincere thank you to all passengers\/staff for your patience, understanding and co-operation during this challenging day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">An <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/irish-rail\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/irish-rail\/\">Irish Rail<\/a> spokeswoman said the line will remain closed overnight between Westport and Athlone. Services to and from Westport can expect significant disruption on Friday morning.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Our thoughts are with everyone affected by today\u2019s incidents<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ll continue to do our best to provide clear and timely updates as info becomes available<\/p>\n<p>A sincere thank you to all passengers\/staff for your patience, understanding and cooperation during this challenging day. -AD<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Iarnr\u00f3d \u00c9ireann (@IrishRail) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/IrishRail\/status\/2095630662816477186?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow\">September 3, 2026<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">An Garda S\u00edoch\u00e1na said in a statement: \u201cGarda\u00ed are currently at the scene of a serious traffic incident at Kiltybo, Ballyhaunis, Co Mayo.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThe road is currently closed with local diversions in place.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">It is the second incident involving a vehicle being struck by a train at a crossing on the Westport line on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Earlier, a train collided with a tractor at around 4pm when it was attempting to cross the rail line at another  user-operated crossing near Tullamore, Co <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/offaly\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/offaly\">Offaly<\/a>.
