Kate Beckinsale<\/a> is opening up about her struggles with grief.<\/p>\n On Wednesday (September 2), the 53-year-old actress took to Instagram<\/a> to speak candidly about the difficulties of navigating post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).<\/p>\n In the video, Kate discussed how PTSD isn\u2019t fully understood or studied, especially among women.<\/p>\n \u201cThere are men and women and children who have seen such absolute horror or experienced such absolute horror that their nervous system is permanently altered as a result,\u201d she said, per People<\/a>. \u201cAnd a lot of those people become incredibly good at masking it. And it\u2019s sad because they become so good that they get no grace whatsoever.\u201d<\/p>\n Kate added, \u201cThey get up, they go to work, they look after their kids, they provide for their family, they have a laugh, they\u2019re the fun person, but they don\u2019t sleep for more than an hour because when they do, it\u2019s full of nightmares. Anything \u2014 smells, sounds, thoughts, feelings \u2014 can trigger them into a place that is actually like hell.\u201d<\/p>\n The Underworld actress then encouraged others to be kinder because you don\u2019t know what people are going through.<\/p>\n \u201cGiven the fact that it\u2019s invisible and you can\u2019t know, maybe err on the side of being gentler with people, being kinder,\u201d Kate said. \u201cIt really is true that when you haven\u2019t walked a mile in someone\u2019s shoes \u2014 however fancy you think the shoes are \u2014 you have absolutely no idea what they might be carrying, masking, dealing with day and night.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cSomeone with PTSD is on their own with it, by definition \u2026 so those are the loneliest people,\u201d she continued. \u201cThey\u2019re alone with a level of horror that\u2019s incompatible with life and yet, a lot of times those people continue to try and put one foot in front of the other.\u201d<\/p>\n In a second video, Kate pointed that August 30 was National Grief Awareness Day and some people who have PTSD have \u201cseen the worst of mortality and tried to keep going.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cMaybe don\u2019t always tell a person how strong they are,\u201d she said. \u201cMaybe that person is just crushed under the weight of having been strong for years \u2026 and their strength has been misinterpreted as not needing gentleness.\u201d<\/p>\n Kate continued, \u201cThere are people who are silently caregiving, watching their loved ones deteriorate in horrifying and frightening ways that they\u2019re not medically qualified to deal with. And they do it on their own. And it can break them, especially when everyone else relies on the trope of saying, \u2018Wow you\u2019re so strong.\u2019 The person needs, \u2018I\u2019ll be here if you need to fall apart.\u2019 \u201d<\/p>\n \u201cBut most people aren\u2019t capable of providing that safety. So, try to become a person who can provide that safety. You could be the difference for someone,\u201d she concluded.<\/p>\n She has since deleted both videos from her Instagram.<\/p>\n Kate has been very transparent with fans about how she\u2019s been suffering lately following the death of her mom Judy Loe<\/a>, who passed away in July 2025 after being diagnosed with stage 4 cancer.
