A few days ago, critic Luke Hearfield wrote a reaction<\/a> to Danny Boyle\u2019s \u201cInk,\u201d citing that the biggest \u201cscandal\u201d of the film was the decision to include \u201cwhat looked like\u201d AI-generated depictions of the Kray Twins and Margaret Thatcher.<\/p>\n

Now that I\u2019ve seen \u201cInk,\u201d I noticed this as well, particularly when Thatcher shows up on-screen for, at most, 10 seconds. She looked remarkably like Thatcher and came off as almost too polished, non-human like. Now, it could just be bad CGI, and Hearfield has since amended what he said, calling it more of a \u201cknee-jerk response\u201d to what he witnesses on-screen, which only \u201clooked\u201d like AI. Still, plenty of others have now come out wondering the same thing.<\/p>\n

Furthermore, online sleuths have noticed that on the \u201cInk\u201d IMDb page, Dillan Nicholls, a \u201cgenerative AI visual effects supervisor and producer,\u201d is credited. Furthermore, Nicholls\u2019 LinkedIn page confirms his work on \u201cInk.\u201d Odds are, Hearfield\u2019s suspicions might not have been totally off \u2014 there might actually be something to this story.<\/p>\n

Of course, AI has already been used \u2014 often in secret \u2014 on a number of recent films, including \u201cSupergirl\u201d and \u201cThe Ice Cream Man.\u201d The key wording there is \u201cin secret\u201d: we only know about the titles I mentioned because the filmmakers were \u201ccaught.\u201d AI is most likely already being used far more widely across Hollywood than we realize, and while its use remains highly taboo at the moment, the future is unlikely to bring fewer films using AI.
