Scientists just worked out it&#8217;s much wider than they thought"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Milky Ways\u2019s most distant spiral arms may extend significantly farther into space than previously believed, meaning fundamental models of our home Galaxy may need to be revised.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Astronomers used an innovative measurement technique based on X-ray echoes from powerful gamma-ray bursts captured by NASA\u2019s Chandra X-ray Observatory and ESA\u2019s XMM-Newton.<\/p>\n<p>Publishing in Astronomy &amp; Astrophysics, the international team measured the distances to dust clouds within the Milky Way\u2019s spiral arms by studying expanding X-ray rings produced by bright gamma-ray bursts in distant galaxies.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As the X-rays travelled towards Earth, some were scattered by the dust clouds, creating \u2018light echoes\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>These illuminated the clouds and allowed researchers to calculate their precise distances from Earth, with larger rings produced by dust clouds closer to us.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"657\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/andromeda-milky-way-collision.jpg\" alt=\"Artist's impression of the Andromeda Milky Way collision.
