AT LEAST FIVE people have died and five more were injured when an Amazon cargo plane overshot a runway as it landed at a Florida airport.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The plane crashed into vehicles and caught fire at Miami International Airport at around 2pm (7pm Irish time) on Sunday afternoon.<\/p>\n
Video showed thick smoke billowing from the blue and white Boeing 767 plane.<\/p>\n
A senior police officer said there is \u201cno apparent threat to public safety\u201d from the incident but that there are \u201cat least five deceased individuals\u201d at the scene.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The Federal Aviation Administration, which manages air travel in the United States, said in a statement on social media that the incident happened as the plane arrived at the airport from San Juan in Puerto Rico.<\/p>\n
Miami International Airport said in a statement that the plane was left \u201cdisabled\u201d at the northwest end of the airport after it overran a diagonal runway.<\/p>\n
\u201cFirefighters are working on extinguishing the fire and assessing patients,\u201d the Miami-Dade Fire Department said on X.<\/p>\n
The fire department said the plane hit multiple vehicles near the airport, where more than 60 firefighting units rushed to the scene.<\/p>\n
Amazon put out a statement saying the aircraft \u201cexperienced an incident while attempting to land.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is a fast-moving situation and we\u2019re still gathering details. We\u2019re working closely with local authorities and officials to understand exactly what happened,\u201d Amazon spokesperson Kelly Nantel said in the statement.<\/p>\n
All planes have been grounded at the airport and all runways are currently closed, the airport said.<\/p>\n
The Federal Aviation Administration said it will investigate the incident.<\/p>\n
