At least five people have been killed after an Amazon<\/a> cargo plane crashed at Miami International Airport in Florida<\/a> on Sunday afternoon. The flight, from Puerto Rico, overshot the runway, striking several vehicles and erupting in flames as dark smoke billowed into the sky, bringing operations at one of the busiest airports in the US<\/a> to a halt.<\/p>\n

Videos posted online show heavy plumes of smoke surrounding an aircraft bearing the Amazon arrow logo on its tail. <\/p>\n

Daniella Levine Cava, the mayor of Miami-Dade county, said at a news conference on Sunday that in addition to the five people who were killed, five others were injured. Miami-Dade fire rescue confirmed during the same conference that 10 people in total were involved, with five deaths, three people in critical condition and two taken to a local hospital.<\/p>\n

A source told NBC News that the two pilots and three others were taken to the hospital.<\/p>\n

The plane was a Boeing 767 flying for Amazon Prime Air.<\/p>\n

The Federal Aviation Authority (FAA) confirmed the crash in a statement to the Guardian, saying: \u201c21 Air Flight 7598 overran the runway after landing at Miami International Airport around 2pm local time on Sunday, September 6. The Boeing 767-300 cargo aircraft departed from Luis Mu\u00f1oz Mar\u00edn International Airport in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The FAA will investigate.\u201d<\/p>\n

The plane overran the airport\u2019s diagonal runway and was disabled at the northwest end of the airport, a spokesperson for Miami International Airport (MIA) said.<\/p>\n

An air and ground stop has been issued at the airport, preventing all other flights from landing or taking off at the busy south Florida hub.<\/p>\n

\u201cAll runways and taxiways at MIA are currently closed as of 3pm and a ground stop is in effect,\u201d the airport said, adding: \u201cMiami-Dade Fire Rescue has responded to the scene.\u201d<\/p>\n

More than 60 units from the Miami-Dade fire rescue services appeared on the scene, with units arriving \u201cto find an airplane that had caught on fire as a result of this crash, with heavy flames and smoke showing\u201d, the fire department said, with the post adding that the plane had struck multiple vehicles near the airport.<\/p>\n

Firefighters were \u201cworking on extinguishing the fire and assessing patients\u201d, the post on X said.<\/p>\n

US transportation secretary Sean Duffy said on X that responders would \u201cassess the scene after an Amazon cargo plane overran the runway\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you\u2019re travelling through the area, please expect significant delays and potential cancellations,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the Miami-Dade sheriff\u2019s office announced street closures due to the crash, saying on X: \u201cNW 67th Avenue between NW 25th Street \u2013 NW 36th Street is currently closed. Expect delays and seek alternate routes.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Guardian has also reached out to Amazon and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) for comment. <\/p>\n
