\n On World Field Epidemiology Day, UNITED4Surveillance highlights the importance of stronger disease surveillance in protecting public health and responding to emerging threats across Europe<\/p>\n

Strong national surveillance systems are an important part of protecting public health. They help countries identify disease outbreaks early, monitor emerging health threats and take timely action to protect communities.<\/p>\n

Today, on World Field Epidemiology Day, attention is being brought to the need to strengthen the systems and expertise needed to detect and respond to public health threats.<\/p>\n

Building stronger surveillance systems<\/p>\n

Under the EU4Health programme, the European Health and Digital Executive Agency (HaDEA) has managed the Joint Action UNITED4Surveillance,<\/a> an initiative aimed at improving the surveillance, prevention and control of infectious diseases across the EU and European Economic Area.<\/p>\n

The initiative has focused on bringing together existing and new health data sources while strengthening surveillance capacity. Its work has also supported wider efforts to improve global health security.<\/p>\n

UNITED4Surveillance has concentrated on three key areas: outbreak detection, hospital surveillance and One Health surveillance.<\/p>\n

Improving outbreak detection and hospital surveillance<\/p>\n

Better use of surveillance data can help health authorities identify infectious disease outbreaks more quickly. The initiative has explored improved monitoring methods and early warning approaches designed to support faster responses.<\/p>\n

Hospital surveillance has also been a major focus. Improved data integration can help hospitals detect and monitor healthcare-associated infections, allowing health professionals and authorities to respond more effectively to potential threats.<\/p>\n

A third area is One Health surveillance<\/a>, which recognises the links between human, animal and environmental health. Greater cooperation across these areas can help countries respond more effectively to health threats that cross traditional boundaries.<\/p>\n

From pilot projects to national action<\/p>\n

As part of UNITED4Surveillance, participating countries piloted a range of best practices, new approaches and surveillance tools. The results were brought together in a structured roadmap<\/a> outlining potential solutions for introducing more integrated surveillance at both national and European levels.<\/p>\n

Building on this work, HaDEA is now managing 23 direct grants for EU countries and associated countries. The grants help national authorities strengthen their surveillance systems and build more resilient, coordinated public health services.<\/p>\n

Investing in digital systems and skills<\/p>\n

The funded projects cover a range of activities. These include improving the collection, analysis and reporting of health data, upgrading digital surveillance infrastructure and increasing interoperability between national and European systems.<\/p>\n

The grants will also support laboratory and epidemiological capacity, workforce development and training, and preparedness for health threats that cross national borders.<\/p>\n
