{"id":617987,"date":"2026-09-08T07:40:09","date_gmt":"2026-09-08T07:40:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/617987\/"},"modified":"2026-09-08T07:40:09","modified_gmt":"2026-09-08T07:40:09","slug":"bristols-century-old-asylum-stories-revealed-in-photographs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/617987\/","title":{"rendered":"Bristol&#8217;s century-old asylum stories revealed in photographs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Century-old photographs of patients treated in a mental asylum during the Victorian and Edwardian eras are being unearthed to give a rare insight into the lives they led. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Paul Tobia, a former mental health nurse, is devoting his time to studying the patient records of people treated at the hospital known, at the time, as Bristol Lunatic Asylum.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Tobia already leads talks about the patients, and the photographs are being exhibited at the Glenside Hospital Museum, based near Frenchay.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">He said: &#8220;From about 1890, they started taking photographs of the patients, and these I became particularly interested in because they were really evocative.
