Barry Cotter has completed a move to CSKA Sofia from Derry City for an undisclosed fee.<\/p>\n
Cotter joined Derry from Barnsley on a free transfer in February of this year and made 30 appearances, scoring two goals.<\/p>\n
The Clare man played every minute of Derry’s recent Europa League double header against the Bulgarian side.<\/p>\n
Derry lost 5-3 on aggregate with Cotter scoring an own goal in the first leg. Despite that he impressed their European opponents enough to be approached and signed.<\/p>\n
CSKA will be the 27-year-old’s ninth club in his career but the first time for a team outside of Ireland or England.<\/p>\n
There were previous spells with Limerick FC, Shamrock Rovers and St. Patrick\u2019s Athletic, alongside time across the English Football League.<\/p>\n
CSKA Sofia play the final of the Bulgarian Super Cup tomorrow and sit third in the table after seven matches.<\/p>\n
In an official statement on the club’s website, Derry’s interim manager Mark Connolly said it was a move that suited all parties.<\/p>\n
“Barry was obviously an important member of our squad, however this is a fantastic opportunity for him, and the club didn\u2019t want to stand in his way.<\/p>\n
“We want to wish Barry every success at CSKA.”<\/p>\n
