Anthony Daly says Clare people remain aggrieved about the Peter Duggan-Nickie Quaid incident in July\u2019s All-Ireland SHC semi-final<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Limerick goalkeeper Quaid was issued with a yellow card by referee Thomas Walsh when he fouled Duggan for a penalty in the 54th minute.<\/p>\n

Tony Kelly converted a goal from the placed ball to put Clare six points ahead. While it was a goalscoring opportunity<\/a>, the Clare forward was deemed not to have had full control of the sliotar and therefore avoided a black card.<\/p>\n

As John Meyler\u2019s hurling expert group<\/a> finalise their experimental rules, Daly says the rule must change and the decision has stuck in the craw of Clare supporters.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople are still upset over it,\u201d said Daly, who was promoting Stream Sport\u2019s live coverage of the Clare, Galway and Limerick hurling knock-out championship stages.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have plenty of Limerick people calling here (to Daly\u2019s Murty Browne\u2019s pub in Tullycrine) as well on buses, and everyone knows Kilkee is full of Limerick people in the summer. We\u2019d always have them in and out and they\u2019d point to some other tackle that should have been a red card, but it was just the timing of the whole thing and if Nickie was off the field and you’d 14 against 15 and Clare were six up\u2026\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cCan you imagine the noise that would have been if he (Quaid) saved the penalty? It would have been nuts altogether and Clare can also say they didn’t score after the penalty.\u201d Daly continued: \u201cI was as mad as any Clare man, but if I’m on The Sunday Game I’m trying to just not be a black Clare man and trying to say this rule is wrong, and that’s the point I made so strongly on the day on RT\u00c9.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was gutted, it was a chance of an All-Ireland, we don’t have too many of them to be getting to the final, there\u2019s no guarantee we’d have won it but if you’re in it, you have a better chance of winning it than going home from the semi-final.<\/p>\n

\u201cLook, I got a bit of grief… but I do try and not just be Mr Clare when I go on those things. I\u2019m as passionate about the county as any man so look, yeah, still very disappointed and it\u2019s still very raw with people, you know.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

The mitigation that Duggan wasn\u2019t in control of the ball doesn\u2019t cut it for Daly. \u201cPeter Duggan knew exactly what he was doing by scooping it over Nickie’s head.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen you throw up the ball to hit it, are you in control of the ball? You’ve released the ball from your body and your hand and off your hurley. So, that’s kind of an arguable one.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd I think that was the epitome of what a black card is. Nickie knew \u2018this is a goal for Clare here. I\u2019ll take him down, I take my chances.\u2019 And I think Nicky was nearly ready to walk.<\/p>\n

\u201cNow don’t get me wrong, my favourite keeper of all time is becoming Nicky very quickly because he’s just brought it to another level. But that rule will have to change because it needs clarifying badly.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

As far as other rule changes go, Daly would go further than Davy Fitzgerald and insist six players from each team should be in their opponents\u2019 half of the field for puck-outs. His former team-mate Fitzgerald last week told this newspaper four should have to always remain in the other team\u2019s half.<\/p>\n

Daly is not as keen on a hand-pass restriction as he believes it\u2019s one coaches are themselves trying to fix. He wouldn\u2019t award two points for a sideline cut either but supports the 65 moving out to the middle of the field.<\/p>\n

He expects Tony Kelly and other Clare veterans will commit for another season in 2027, while he was delighted Brian Lohan appears to be good to go again. Lohan has two years remaining in his current term.<\/p>\n

\u201cEveryone wants Brian to oversee the thing. There\u2019s massive respect for him in the county. Fellas who might be considering their future at the other end of the age bracket or mileage bracket, they are not going to say anything until the club is finished anyway, they don’t want to be distracting from their club teams.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

The appeal of ending Clare\u2019s wait for a Munster SHC title that goes back to 1998 only grows stronger, says Daly. \u201cLook at the heartbreak they’ve had as a management in Munster finals. The one in the Gaelic Grounds, the one that went to the extra-time in Thurles. My God, what matches.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey’d love a Munster, don’t have any doubt that Tony Kelly would like a Munster medal to finish up. I don’t think it has diminished.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
