There is a certain tension between the Indian homeowner\u2019s appetite for minimalism<\/a> and our rich traditions of maximalist decorating. Those who favour minimalist aesthetics do so because of the atmosphere of calm it creates, \u201cThey want a tranquil sanctuary away from the city’s exterior noise,\u201d explains Ashish Dalal, principal designer at the Pune-based firm AD Design Works. He was approached by a couple from Ahmednagar, Maharashtra<\/a> for the design of their 3,000-square-foot apartment in the same city.<\/p>\n

Owing to their professional involvement in the textile industry, the couple wanted a space that, \u201cMirrored their deep appreciation for indigenous craftsmanship,\u201d says Dalal. However, they also wanted a space that countered the fast-paced nature of city life, which made them lean towards contemporary warm minimalism. Dalal\u2019s main challenge was to strike a balance between the simplicity of minimalist design, and the need to honour Indian craftsmanship.<\/p>\n

Dalal decided to forgo the ornamentation of Indian craftsmanship and focus on its tactility instead.
