5,000–7,500; 7,500–10,000 and more than 10,000 steps.

Scientists additionally recorded each individual participant’s fastest sustained stepping rate during their most active half hour of the day.

This researchers said this suggests ‘that higher intensity at lower volume can provide health benefits comparable to that of lower intensity but higher volume’ (Getty/iStock)

Researchers from Monash University in Australia subsequently examined data concerning the number of people dying from any cause or from cardiovascular disease over roughly eight years of follow-up.

Overall, 1,697 people in the study died from any cause while 502 died from cardiovascular disease.

Analysis showed that the risk of death was substantially lower among those achieving a higher stepping pace (at least 80 steps per minute) but fewer than 5,000 daily steps.

This was similar to to the lower risk of death among those clocking up 5,000–7,500 daily steps but at a lower stepping pace (60 steps per minute),

This researchers said this suggests “that higher intensity at lower volume can provide health benefits comparable to that of lower intensity but higher volume”.

Maintaining a higher pace for at least 30 minutes per day was associated with a progressively lower risk of death from any cause among those accumulating fewer than 7,500 steps/day.

Overall, the study found that 7,500–10,000 steps per day offered the lowest risk of an early death, irrespective of the pace.

Similar findings were found for the risk of a cardiovascular disease death.

Emily McGrath, senior cardiac nurse at British Heart Foundation, said: “When it comes to walking, putting a little more pace into your step could matter as much as clocking up more steps.

“This study suggests that people who struggle to find time for a long walk may still benefit from shorter periods of brisker walking.

Overall, the study found that 7,500–10,000 steps per day offered the lowest risk of an early death, irrespective of the pace (Alamy/PA)

“It’s important to remember that this research can only show an association, not cause and effect.

“But the encouraging message is that every step counts, and some quicker ones may count for more.

“Try picking up the pace until you feel warmer, breathe a little harder and your heart beats faster, while still being able to hold a conversation. Start with what feels manageable and build up gradually.”

Juliet Bouverie, chief executive of the Stroke Association, said: “In the UK, someone has a stroke every five minutes, often leaving survivors with life-changing disabilities.

“These findings add to growing evidence that the intensity of physical activity may matter, alongside the amount of exercise completed, to help prevent conditions including stroke.

“We continue to remind people that, as a preventative measure, exercise alongside a healthy diet, not smoking and monitoring alcohol intake, can minimise the chances of having a stroke.

“Regularly monitoring blood pressure, the single biggest risk factor for stroke, is also important, so steps can be taken to reduce it, if required.

“Importantly, stroke survivors should first follow advice from their healthcare professional to reduce the risk of recurrent stroke.”

Your support helps us to tell the story From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The…

[37
499,103,61,60,262768
post-619175","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-fitness","tag-fitness","tag-health","tag-ie","tag-ireland","tag-pa-feature-wellbeing-japanese-walking
["GET
