The Pentagon\u2019s top artificial intelligence official said on Tuesday that America\u2019s closest allies lack the resources to keep pace with the US military\u2019s adoption of AI, and that Washington is working to steer them away from mistakes it made along the way.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey don\u2019t have the resources that we do, they don\u2019t have the experience that we do, they don\u2019t have the scale that we do,\u201d Cameron Stanley, chief digital and artificial intelligence officer at the Department of Defense, said at an event at the Billington Cybersecurity summit. Of Nato and the Five Eyes, an intelligence-sharing partnership of the US, UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, Stanley said Washington was \u201cactively working with a number of our partners\u201d so \u201cthey don\u2019t make the same mistakes that we make\u201d.<\/p>\n

The comments come less than a year into Stanley\u2019s tenure, during which the Pentagon\u2019s AI office has rolled out several new tools while losing a number of senior staff. Since January, Stanley has overseen the launch<\/a> of GenAI.mil, an internal chatbot platform he says has reached 1.7 million users, and Agent Network, a system designed to shorten the time between intelligence-gathering and a commander\u2019s decision. The defense secretary, Pete Hegseth, has directed Stanley\u2019s office to report AI deployment speed<\/a> as a monthly metric, part of a wider push to expand military computing power.<\/p>\n

Much of Stanley\u2019s appearance focused on speed. He described watching a commander halt a scheduled briefing to take a 30-second phone call and issue an order on the spot, without a formal decision brief or a review of the room\u2019s security clearance level. He called the moment \u201crevolutionary\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cI know it sounds simplistic,\u201d Stanley explained. \u201cIt\u2019s only simplistic because we\u2019re good at it now.\u201d<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a term he has used before. Project Maven, the Pentagon\u2019s original AI targeting program launched in 2017, became the Palantir-built Maven Smart System, which the US leaned on heavily during its 2026 air campaign against Iran, helping strike more than 13,000 targets over the first 38 days<\/a>, according to Stanley at conference in May. Speaking at Palantir\u2019s AIPCon 9 conference in March<\/a>, Stanley called Maven \u201crevolutionary\u201d too, saying it let commanders go from identifying a target to launching a strike within a single platform.<\/p>\n

But the campaign has drawn scrutiny<\/a>. More than 120 members of the US Congress signed a letter demanding answers from the Pentagon regarding civilian casualties and the use of artificial intelligence, following a 28 February strike on an elementary school in Minab, which Iranian officials say killed at least 168 people, many of them children.<\/p>\n

Stanley ended by telling the audience that the department\u2019s old habits were now its biggest liability.<\/p>\n
