\n\tThe last time the War on Drugs<\/a> released a new song, it was 2022 and the band was taking a victory lap for its well-received album I Don\u2019t Live Here Anymore<\/a>. Four years later, we haven\u2019t heard a peep from singer-songwriter Adam Granduciel and co. \u2014 but that\u2019s changing today with the release of \u201cWho\u2019s That.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe band\u2019s big return delivers everything a War on Drugs fan might be hoping for, especially if you\u2019ve caught this song at one of their recent concerts. Granduciel, who wrote and produced the song at his studio in Burbank, California, layers all kinds of six- and 12-string guitars, a Mellotron and other vintage synths, and more into a sweeping vision that\u2019s largely his own handiwork. Bandmates Anthony LaMarca, David Hartley, Robbie Bennett, Jon Natchez, and Eliza Hardy-Jones, plus additional contributors Alex Fischel (of Spoon) and Lily Honigberg, join him to create a backing track that feels like the reason the word \u201canthemic\u201d was first introduced to music journalism.<\/p>\n

\n\tOver that majestic backdrop, Granduciel delivers a set of characteristically vulnerable lyrics, singing about deep emotions (\u201cIt\u2019s only my depression, baby\u201d) and asking big questions (\u201cWhere do I belong?\u201d \u201cDid I blow it?\u201d \u201cWould it be so wrong to be on the take?\u201d) in his Dylanesque drawl.<\/p>\n

\n\tIn a statement, Granduciel describes the song as a product of his daily life in L.A. \u201c\u2018Who\u2019s That\u2019 was written in 10 minutes somewhere between first coffee and school drop-off. It\u2019s a song about trying to love yourself despite things we can\u2019t always control, like the anxiety, depression and self-doubt that may stand in the way of living the life we truly desire.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tGranduciel has hinted that the band may have something bigger on the way. \u201cI\u2019m almost done making a record, and we\u2019re close to the end,\u201d he told Guitar.com<\/a> this spring. \u201cI wanted to do something that\u2019s not different, necessarily, in terms of the way it sounds, but something that\u2019s trying to get back to the first couple of records I made. So it\u2019s basically fully homemade.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tIn the meantime, the War on Drugs are about to hit the road for a run of fall shows and festivals.<\/p>\n
