Uilleann piper Paddy Keenan, one of the most celebrated musicians in Irish traditional music, has died.<\/p>\n

Keenan was one of the leading exponents of the instrument and was known for his distinctive playing style, earning him the nickname “Jimi Hendrix of the uilleann pipes”.<\/p>\n

He was a founding member of The Bothy Band, which emerged in 1975 and went on to become one of the most influential groups in Irish traditional music.<\/p>\n

Born into a Traveller family in Trim, Co Meath, and raised in Dublin, Keenan was the third generation of his family to play the uilleann pipes.<\/p>\n

He was taught by his father from the age of 10 and performed his first major concert at Dublin’s Gaiety Theatre when he was 14. He later performed with his family in a group called The Pavees.<\/p>\n

Keenan was a founding member of The Bothy Band, which emerged in 1975 and went on to become one of the most influential groups in Irish traditional music.<\/p>\n

His playing was a defining part of the band’s sound, combining technical virtuosity with an energetic and forceful style.<\/p>\n

The Bothy Band broke up in 1979, after which Keenan pursued a solo career and continued to record and perform internationally.<\/p>\n

His work included solo and collaborative recordings, and his playing influenced generations of uilleann pipers in Ireland and abroad.<\/p>\n

Keenan’s contribution to traditional music was recognised in 2002 when he received the TG4 Gradam Ceoil Musician of the Year award. He received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Irish Music Association in 2011.<\/p>\n
