\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tExplanation: What does this image look like to you?<\/a> Many see a\u00a0giraffe<\/a>\u00a0facing right, with neck stretched high and long legs mid-stride (but some may see a\u00a0squirrel<\/a>\u00a0instead). The\u00a0featured image<\/a>\u00a0shows\u00a0LDN 1295<\/a>, also called the Giraffe Nebula, in the constellation<\/a> of the mythical queen of Aethiopia<\/a> (Cassiopeia<\/a>). It is an object in the\u00a0Lynds Catalogue<\/a>\u00a0of\u00a0Dark Nebulas<\/a>, compiled in\u00a01962<\/a>\u00a0by American astronomer\u00a0Beverly Lynds<\/a>, a pioneer for women in astronomy and astrophysics.\u00a0Dark nebulas<\/a>\u00a0are interstellar\u00a0clouds of dust and gas<\/a>\u00a0that block the visible light of the stars\u00a0behind them<\/a>. These\u00a0nebulas<\/a>\u00a0are often faint and challenging targets for astrophotographers. Why do we see animal shapes and faces in nebulas, clouds, and pretty much\u00a0everywhere<\/a>? It is due to\u00a0pareidolia<\/a>, our tendency to look for\u00a0familiar patterns<\/a>. Pareidolia may provide animals with an\u00a0evolutionary advantage<\/a>, for example in identifying (and avoiding) predators.<\/p>\n
