Undoubtedly, the words of high-profile individuals can contribute to trivialising and tolerating sexual violence in our society. And for many survivors of rape, his words will be deeply hurtful and angering to hear.<\/p>\n
Morrogh added: \u201cI will write to Mr O\u2019Leary to offer him training on how the trivialisation of rape is so harmful.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe has verbalised a historical trope and as a leading figure in industry, he should lead from the front in terms of what he says and does.\u201d<\/p>\n
Dr Caroline Forde of the Domestic Violence Advocacy Service accused O\u2019Leary of being \u201ccallous\u201d and using \u201csensational language about a very pervasive and serious issue\u201d.<\/p>\n
She told Newstalk\u2019s Claire Byrne Show: \u201cHe\u2019s doing that while triggering and re-traumatising victims and survivors.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s extremely offensive.\u201d<\/p>\n
People Before Profit-Solidarity TD Ruth Coppinger blasted the comments as \u201creally disgusting\u201d, which she said had the effect of serving to \u201ctrivialize rape and sexual assault\u201d. <\/p>\n
Coppinger added that she believes the airline chief executive\u2019s remarks were likely not off-the-cuff, because O\u2019Leary \u201cknows it will get covered in the media\u201d afterwards.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s a provocative comment in order to have a cut at his competitors, and to throw around the word rapists like that is just very offensive and hurtful to survivors and victims of sexual assault and rape,\u201d the Dublin West TD said.<\/p>\n
