PROTESTS are planned in Shannon and Doonbeg this weekend ahead of US President Donald Trump\u2019s visit to Clare, with campaigners declaring: \u201cTrump is not welcome in Clare.\u201d<\/p>\n
Shannonwatch\u00a0has announced plans to join other groups and individuals at Shannon Airport on Saturday, September 12, with a protest due to begin at 1pm.<\/p>\n
The group has also said it fully supports protests planned in Doonbeg, where Trump is expected to spend part of the weekend while attending the Amgen Irish Open at his golf resort.<\/p>\n
Speaking to\u00a0The Clare Echo\u00a0ahead of the visit, a Shannonwatch\u00a0spokesperson said the\u00a0organisation and its members had protested the presence of every US president to visit Ireland since the beginning of the century, including Trump during his first term.\u00a0\u201cTrump is not welcome in Clare,\u201d the group said.<\/p>\n
Shannonwatch\u00a0said it regarded the actions of Trump and his administration as \u201cparticularly reprehensible\u201d, pointing to US support for Israel during the war in Gaza and the wider conflict in the Middle East.<\/p>\n
The group accused the US administration of \u201cthe ongoing funding of and participation in apartheid Israel\u2019s ethnic cleansing occupation and genocide of the Palestinian people\u201d. It also\u00a0criticised\u00a0US and Israeli military action involving Iran, as well as US policy towards Venezuela, Greenland and Cuba.<\/p>\n
Shannonwatch\u00a0said Trump had \u201ccontinued to arm Israel throughout its deadly attacks on Gaza\u201d, which it said had resulted in more than 73,000 deaths.<\/p>\n
The group also accused the Trump administration of providing \u201cpolitical cover\u201d for Israel\u2019s occupation and attacks on southern Lebanon.<\/p>\n
Shannonwatch\u00a0said the current Trump presidency had been \u201ccharacterised\u00a0by the undermining of international laws and global jurisprudence, and colossal damage to the global environment\u201d.<\/p>\n
The group also made a series of personal allegations against the US President, describing him as \u201ca racist, misogynist and transphobic\u201d\u00a0amoungst\u00a0other more serious criminal allegations.<\/p>\n
Shannonwatch\u00a0said: \u201cThe vast majority of people in Ireland are fundamentally opposed to crimes against humanity and the environment. They stand with Palestine, and all oppressed peoples.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWe encourage them to make this clear by participating in peaceful protests against Trump over the coming weekend,\u201d the group added.<\/p>\n
A poster promoting the planned demonstrations calls on people to take part in \u201cThe Great Irish Unwelcome\u201d in Shannon and Doonbeg on Saturday and Sunday.<\/p>\n
The\u00a0organisers\u00a0have described the events as open to all, with the poster stating: \u201cAll welcome, except Trump.\u201d<\/p>\n
Trump is expected to arrive in Ireland on Saturday before travelling west to his Trump International Golf Links & Hotel in Doonbeg, which is hosting the Amgen Irish Open from September 10 to 13.<\/p>\n
Protests are expected at Shannon Airport and in Doonbeg during the President\u2019s visit.<\/p>\n
