Released in August 2026, the latest version introduces new list resources and resources spanning services including Amazon DSQL, ECS, ECR, SES, and Pinpoint, alongside further enhancements to Bedrock AgentCore, CloudFront, ElastiCache, Resilience Hub, and Secrets Manager.

The significance of these releases goes beyond the individual resources being added. AWS continues to expand its infrastructure portfolio at a pace that makes the provider an increasingly important abstraction layer between AWS APIs and enterprise infrastructure-as-code practices. Terraform is no longer simply provisioning EC2 instances, networks, and S3 buckets; the provider is increasingly representing higher-level capabilities around AI, resilience, security, databases, and application services.

The AWS provider’s rapid evolution also highlights an important difference between Terraform and competing approaches. Pulumi provides a similar multi-cloud infrastructure model, but allows engineers to define infrastructure using general-purpose languages such as TypeScript, Python, Go, C# and Java in addition to YAML and HCL. Pulumi also supports Terraform providers directly, meaning organisations can combine Pulumi’s programming model with the broader Terraform provider ecosystem.

AWS’s own CloudFormation and CDK take a different approach, with much tighter alignment to AWS-native capabilities. That can provide faster access to new AWS features, while Terraform’s advantage remains its broad ecosystem, multi-cloud model, and mature state-driven workflow. OpenTofu is another increasingly relevant alternative, retaining strong Terraform compatibility while providing an open-source path for organisations concerned about Terraform’s licensing direction.

The rapid growth of the AWS provider does, however, come with a governance lesson. Provider upgrades can affect schemas, defaults, state, and resource behaviour. The withdrawal of v6.57.0 earlier this year demonstrated that even mature infrastructure tooling can introduce upgrade risk. For enterprise teams, provider versioning should therefore be treated much like application dependency management: pin versions, test upgrades, review changelogs, and promote changes through controlled environments rather than automatically consuming every new release.

Version 6.58.0, released on 5 August, also expanded Terraform’s observability capabilities with new resources for Amazon Managed Service for Prometheus, including aws_prometheus_anomaly_detector and aws_prometheus_scraper_logging_configuration, alongside list-resource support for Prometheus anomaly detectors, scrapers, and scraper logging configurations. This is a useful addition for engineering teams looking to manage not just infrastructure, but the monitoring and operational visibility around that infrastructure as code.

Ultimately, the AWS provider is becoming more than a collection of Terraform resources. It is increasingly a translation layer between AWS’s rapidly expanding infrastructure capabilities and an organisation’s engineering governance model. As cloud environments become more complex and increasingly AI-driven, the value of infrastructure-as-code will depend not simply on how quickly a tool can create resources, but on how effectively it can make those resources repeatable, auditable, secure, and governable.

The Terraform AWS Provider continues its rapid evolution, with v6.62.0 adding support for new AWS capabilities while improving…

[6
8172,23845,61,56459,60,80,23747,263860
post-621439","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-technology","tag-aws","tag-devops","tag-ie","tag-infrastructure-as-code","tag-ireland","tag-technology","tag-terraform","tag-terraform-aws-provider-6-62
["GET
