\n\tAnd yet, Adam is also a predatory dater and fuckboy (a \u201chorny little freak\u201d according to one character), who uses his carefully crafted persona to chat up any attractive woman in his vicinity, only to then ditch them post-hook up by blaming, among many well-rehearsed excuses, his \u201cbojangled headspace.\u201d<\/p>\n
\n\tBut what starts out feeling like a contemporary romantic comedy takes a sharp turn when one encounter (at a theater bar, of course) leads to Adam\u2019s desirability levels skyrocketing uncontrollably, prompting a crescendo of chaos that moves \u201cEverybody Wants to Fuck Me\u201d into horror-thriller territories (in one scene, a pack of women chase after him down a street). This is \u201cObsession,\u201d but on a much broader \u2014 and thankfully more hilarious and less gory \u2014 level.<\/p>\n
\n\t\u201cThe need to be looked at and gazed turns on him \u2014 it\u2019s become the gaze on steroids,\u201d says Schey, who set out with the idea of taking a \u201cWhen Harry Met Sally\u201d-style movie and smashing it against another genre.<\/p>\n
\n\tIn Egerton, he saw someone who could play a \u201cnebbishy\u201d man like Billy Crystal. \u201cThey\u2019re charming, they\u2019re funny and then suddenly I was like\u2026 Taron Egerton! He\u2019s amazing and in \u2018Rocketman\u2019 and \u2018Eddie the Eagle,\u2019 very funny,\u201d he says, adding that since the actor had made so many U.S. movies he hadn\u2019t been seen on screen using his own accent for some time. \u201cSo I thought, oh, this is an exciting opportunity. [Adam] is someone who is likeable and unlikeable. He\u2019s the murky area character and I just thought Taron could carry an audience through the film. And even if you didn\u2019t like him, you\u2019d find him charming \u2026 which is what Billy Crystal did.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tAlongside Egerton, \u201cEverybody Wants to Fuck Me\u201d boasts a buzzy British cast including Jessica Henwick, Charly Clive and Mia McKenna-Bruce (the \u201cHow to Have Sex\u201d star\u2019s small role was inspired by Drew Barrymore\u2019s in \u201cScream\u201d). Meanwhile, \u201cSNL U.K.\u201d season 1 breakout Paddy Young makes a brief appearance (in his feature film debut), as does season 2 addition Freddie Meredith. <\/p>\n
\n\tAmusingly, the inspiration for \u201cEverybody Wants to Fuck Me\u201d began in a way that Adam would thoroughly approve of, via a female stand-up comedian at London\u2019s Soho Theatre.<\/p>\n
\n\tSeveral years ago, Schey\u2019s friend Mary Beth Barone (who recently landed her own Netflix special) was doing a show in which she would quiz guys about their online dating life. He \u201cnaively\u201d agreed to take part.<\/p>\n
\n\t\u201cShe had my messages and my profile projected behind her and was analyzing it scientifically, and I\u2019d done the whole spiel of going on dates and then sending these essays being like, \u2018Sorry, I\u2019m not in a great headspace, blah blah blah,’\u201d he says. \u201cAnd the reaction in the room was really interesting. Women were yelling and laughing and cheering at her destroying my Hinge profile, and the guys were all like, \u2018Oh, shit.’\u201d <\/p>\n
\n\tBut amid the embarrassment as his dating app nice guy routine was gleefully ripped apart, Schey saw an opportunity. \u201cI just remember thinking, there\u2019s something here to tap into. There\u2019s a frustration, there\u2019s an anger, but there\u2019s a relatability to everyone\u2019s exhaustion with dating. So a lot of the movie was poking fun at myself.\u201d <\/p>\n
\n\tSchey \u2014\u00a0who previously directed both seasons of cult BBC series \u201cLadhood\u201d \u2014\u00a0admits that he once had a poster on his wall for Joachim Trier\u2019s \u201cThe Worst Person in the World,\u201d but was told to take it down by a friend.<\/p>\n
\n\t\u201cI was like, \u2018Why?\u201d and she said, \u201cYou know why \u2014 because it\u2019s showing that you love feminist movies and arthouse movies,\u201d he says. \u201cAnd 90% of me was like, \u2018No, I love that movie,\u2019 and 10% of me was like, \u2018Yeah.’\u201d<\/p>\n
