Beautiful and bright
\nspiral galaxy M83<\/a>
\nlies some twelve million light-years away, near the southeastern
\ntip of the very long constellation
\nHydra<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Prominent spiral arms traced by dark dust lanes and blue star
\nclusters lend this galaxy its popular name, the Southern Pinwheel. <\/p>\n

Still, reddish
\nstar forming regions<\/a>
\nthat dot this cosmic pinwheel’s spiral arms
\nhave suggested another nickname, the
\nThousand-Ruby Galaxy<\/a>.<\/p>\n

A mere 40,000 light-years across, smaller than the Milky Way,
\nM83 is a member of a group of galaxies that includes active galaxy
\nCentaurus A<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In fact, the core of M83 itself is bright
\nat x-ray energies<\/a>, showing a high
\nconcentration of neutron stars and black holes left from
\nan intense burst of star formation.<\/p>\n

This sharp, groundbased telescopic view also features
\nforeground Milky Way stars and distant background galaxies.<\/p>\n
