The formerly-Alpina-but-now Bovensiepen<\/a> folks are hard at work once again, and this time, it\u2019s the BMW Z4<\/a> that goes under their microscope. The product of this attention is named the Bovensiepen Spider, and this reimagined Z4 sees gains in performance alongside unique appearance and luxury enhancements.<\/p>\n

Famous designer Frank Stephenson<\/a> is responsible for transforming this car\u2019s appearance from BMW to Bovensiepen. Up front, a large splitter finished in a glossy black with \u201cBovensiepen\u201d spelled out lets you know right away that this isn\u2019t just any Z4. More than any other element, though, the front wheel arch vents in the front fenders differentiate this model from the Z4 it started as. These vents draw the eye to the new lightweight, 20-inch forged wheels; the Spider also has unique side skirts, a spicier rear diffuser, quad exhaust, and a rear spoiler now integrated into the trunklid.<\/p>\n

Performance upgrades are handled with a similarly light touch. The 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six remains, but it now makes 429 horsepower and 428 pound-feet of torque, increases of 47 and 59 respectively. (Bovensiepen says it found the extra power by way of a new ram air intake and sports exhaust system.) A new, more powerful cooling fan is installed to support the Spider\u2019s greater performance. The 0-62 mile-per-hour time now sits at 4.2 seconds, which is 0.3 seconds quicker than BMW\u2019s claim for the Z4 M40i this car is based on. Top speed increases to 162 mph, or 183 mph with the optional Performance Package.<\/p>\n

This new Performance Package consists of a milled aluminum differential cover with larger cooling fins, reducing the thermal load on the rear differential. It also adds an underbody V-brace to increase the car\u2019s structural rigidity. Unfortunately, the only transmission option for the Spider is the ZF 8-speed automatic, meaning you can\u2019t spec the Z4 Handschalter\u2019s<\/a> manual transmission.<\/p>\n

The chassis itself is given a light going-through. Bovensiepen re-tuned the dampers, noting that the compression stage has been increased at lower damper speeds. It also fit longer auxiliary springs on the rear axle and wraps the new wheels in Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires. (For reference, the Z4 M40i never got the 4S rubber, as it stuck with the older Pilot Super Sports until the end of production.) Braking is also enhanced should you option the high-performance braking system consisting of larger rotors, four-piston front calipers, and a unique pad compound.<\/p>\n

As you\u2019d expect, Bovensiepen offers lots of customization options for the interior of the Spider. A Lavalina leather steering wheel comes standard, but you can optionally cover practically the entire interior with the soft cowhide, replacing BMW\u2019s Vernasca leather. Alcantara can be specified for other parts of the interior like the A-pillar, the wind deflector, footwell, trunk, and roll bar cover. Each car will also have a numbered plaque.<\/p>\n

Color for the exterior and interior will be totally up to you and your wallet, but Bovensiepen says each of the 99 Spiders it plans to sell will be offered as standard with one of five different BMW colors: 40 in Sapphire Black, 25 in Sanremo Green, 20 in Skyscraper Grey, nine in Thundernight and five in Frozen Grey II. The Spider will be offered for sale worldwide, but its base price in Europe is \u20ac115,500, or about $134,000 at current exchange rates. Deliveries are scheduled to start in the first quarter of 2027.<\/p>\n
