\n\tDespite his acclaimed acting career, Russell Crowe<\/a> has always really wanted to be a rock star.<\/p>\n

That dream appeared to come true on Friday night \u2014 at least for 99 minutes \u2014 as he premiered his self-directed documentary \u201cWhat Love Builds,\u201d about his lesser-known music career, at the Venice Film Festival<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\n\tAs Crowe entered the Sala Darsena (a smaller theater than the Sala Grande, where gala premieres are held), fans were already buzzing, with one shouting out \u201cWe love you Russell Crowe!\u201d as the screening began. Throughout the documentary, which interweaves live performances with an interview of Crowe recounting both his film and music careers, the crowd clapped and cheered as if they were at a concert.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe screening concluded with a short but rowdy two-minute ovation, brought to a premature end when Crowe \u2014 who was wiping tears from his eyes \u2014 decided to exit.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWhat Love Builds\u201d combines concert footage, archive photos and interviews from the past 15 years. Beyond starring in films like \u201cGladiator\u201d and \u201cMaster and Commander,\u201d the New Zealand-born actor has a long-held passion for music and has performed in bands including 30 Odd Foot of Grunts, the Ordinary Fear of God and, most recently, Indoor Garden Party.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cRevealing and deeply personal, it shows how music and acting are intrinsic and interconnected through storytelling and performance,\u201d the film\u2019s synopsis says, adding that it\u2019s \u201ca rare, deep dive into the inspirations behind this legendary and enigmatic artist.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe 62-year-old Crowe gained international recognition in the late \u201990s for his roles in \u201cL.A. Confidential\u201d and \u201cThe Insider\u201d and won the best actor Oscar for his performance in Ridley Scott\u2019s 2000 epic \u201cGladiator.\u201d He made his directorial debut in 2014 with \u201cThe Water Diviner\u201d and also helmed 2022\u2019s \u201cPoker Face\u201d starring Liam Hemsworth and RZA. Crowe\u2019s more recent roles include last year\u2019s critically acclaimed \u201cNuremberg,\u201d in which he portrayed Nazi leader Hermann G\u00f6ring, and historical drama \u201cThe Weight\u201d alongside Ethan Hawke, which bowed at Sundance earlier this year.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Despite his acclaimed acting career, Russell Crowe has always really wanted to be a rock star.
