{"id":621921,"date":"2026-09-12T00:14:17","date_gmt":"2026-09-12T00:14:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/621921\/"},"modified":"2026-09-12T00:14:17","modified_gmt":"2026-09-12T00:14:17","slug":"ecb-chief-economist-warns-inflation-squeeze-will-worsen-leaving-door-open-for-further-rate-hikes-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/621921\/","title":{"rendered":"ECB chief economist warns inflation squeeze will worsen, leaving door open for further rate hikes \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/european-central-bank-ecb\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/european-central-bank-ecb\/\">European Central Bank (ECB)<\/a> chief economist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/philip-lane\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/philip-lane\/\">Philip Lane<\/a> has warned that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/cost-of-living\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/cost-of-living\/\">inflationary squeeze<\/a> on households from rising <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/energy-crisis\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/energy-crisis\/\">energy prices<\/a> is likely to get worse in the coming months.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He predicted inflation across the euro zone would rise to at least 3.6 per cent by the end of the year while describing the ECB\u2019s latest interest rate increase as a \u201cmeasured adjustment to a significant inflation issue\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">His comments will be interpreted as leaving the door open for another ECB rate hike before Christmas.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Financial markets are pricing in one more rate increase this year, \u200bfollowed by one or two moves next year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Speaking at the Dublin Economics Workshop event in Wexford, Lane described the ECB\u2019s latest rate move as \u201ca straightforward decision given this inflation pressure and given the wider resilience of the European economy\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The ECB lifted interest rates by a quarter point (0.25 per cent) on Thursday, following a similar move in June, as the energy shock from the Iran war pushed price growth across the bloc to a four-month high of 3.3 per cent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Asked if he was surprised by the recent spike in oil prices, Lane said: \u201cWe take the energy market as it comes along.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cWhat we have seen, compared to before the war, there have been waves. There was a big increase in oil and gas (prices) in initial couple of months.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/business\/2026\/09\/10\/mortgages-in-the-firing-line-as-ecb-increases-interest-rates-by-025\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mortgages in the firing line as ECB increases interest rates by 0.25 percentage pointsOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThen there is a degree of optimism with the memorandum of understanding, but then more recently, everyone is looking at all of these different military strikes, different military interventions in the Gulf, there is upward pressure (on prices) now,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Lane said the ECB, in making its decision on rates, does not just look at the most recent data point \u201cwe try and look outwards, and try and assess where the energy market is going to go over the next couple of years\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"c-image audio_image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/1789172057_561_1784803479672-9ae96ac7-c636-4bcb-998c-c0aedcc60931.jpeg\"\/>From kitchen counter to supermarket shelves, the rise of Ballymaloe Foods<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cIn making our decision yesterday, energy was at the centre of the decision &#8230; but the big issue is high prices compared to last February before the war, and not the to and fro of this week or the week before,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In terms of governments providing cost of living supports, Lane said governments \u201cabsolutely\u201d do need to help people who are struggling.
