\n\tJosh Hartnett<\/a> was happy to continue his career on the big screen before Below<\/a> <\/a>came his way.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tThe Oppenheimer actor revealed on Friday that was \u201cactively not looking\u201d for television roles before reading the script of the Netflix thriller miniseries, created and written by Jesse McKeown.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cCan I just say I was actively not looking to do a TV show?\u201d\u00a0Harnett shared at The Hollywood Reporter\u2019s Studio at 1 Hotel during Toronto International Film Festival<\/a>, presented by sponsor Canada Goose. \u201cLike, I was actively not looking for this. I\u2019d just came off a movie and wanted to do another movie. I was going to go do another movie, and then I read this [script], and I was like, \u2018Wow, this is amazing.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tSet in a remote Newfoundland fishing village, Below follows Hartnett\u2019s Calvin as he fights to protect his family and community from a mysterious, terrifying sea creature. The series, which also stars Charlie Heaton, Mackenzie Davis and Natasha Henstridge, has been compared to Apple TV\u2019s comedy horror hit Widow\u2019s Bay, but Hartnett sees a distinct difference between the two shows.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201c\u200aI saw Widow\u2019s Bay<\/a> and I really liked it, but there\u2019s a totally different tone in this show,\u201d he explained. \u201cIt\u2019s much more sort of human-oriented and less sort of overtly comedic, but very funny in its own way.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tBelow was filmed on location in St. John\u2019s, Newfoundland, Canada, where Hartnett learned the unique Canadian accent and lived like a local. The Verity actor told THR that he often frequented restaurants in town (\u201cI love The Duke. It\u2019s a great pub\u201d) and did his best \u201cnot to hit [a] moose\u201d while driving. Hartnett and Heaton worked with a dialect coach to perfect the Newfoundland accent.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201c\u200aCharlie and I play father and son, and we are clearly from the same place. We had to find the specific sounds that we were gonna use for our family accent,\u201d the actor said. \u201cNewfoundland is not \u2014 there\u2019s not a lot of people, but it\u2019s a very large land mass, and there are lots of people that have been there for generations in one place. [They have] very specific dialects, and there\u2019s many of them. We had to choose which one was gonna work best, I think, for the family, and then all work together \u2026 We were able to do that, which was really cool, and we had a great dialect coach.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tHartnett added that he listened to The Broadcast, a long-running radio show on CBC, \u201calmost every day\u201d to master the accent \u201cbecause [there] was so many regional dialects.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tWhile his character in Below may be fearless in the water, Harnett has a decidingly different view.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI was born in 1978, like [when] Jaws [was popular],\u201d the actor dished. \u201c[I\u2019m] terrified of the water.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
