President Donald Trump said Saturday that he would \u201clove\u201d to see a unified Ireland, setting off strong reactions in the United Kingdom and beyond.<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, I don\u2019t want to cause any problems, but I will tell you I\u2019d love to see it unified,\u201d the president told reporters at a meeting with Irish Prime Minister Miche\u00e1l Martin in Dublin, where residents took to the streets to protest Trump\u2019s visit.<\/p>\n

\u201cNow, the U.K. will have something to say about it, obviously,\u201d Trump acknowledged. \u201cBut I think it would be a great thing. I mean, how can it be bad?\u201d He added: \u201cI think it would be a fantastic thing.\u201d<\/p>\n

The president\u2019s comments, made en route to the Irish Open tournament at Trump International Golf Links \u2060in Doonbeg, underscore his propensity for intervening in other countries\u2019 political affairs. Still, his suggestion for Irish unification \u2014 a deeply sensitive topic \u2014 pale in comparison to his military campaigns abroad<\/a> and the overt threats he has made to other sovereign nations<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Trump\u2019s remarks were met with immediate pushback in the U.K. across the political spectrum. <\/p>\n

\u201cNorthern Ireland\u2019s constitutional future will be decided by the people of Northern Ireland, not by commentary in London, Dublin or Washington,\u201d Gavin Robinson, leader for Northern Ireland\u2019s Democratic Unionist Party and a member of the U.K. Parliament, said. \u201cAs unionists we are not interested in the destruction of our country by joining with the Irish Republic.\u201d<\/p>\n

President Trump knows better than most that elections matter. Northern Ireland\u2019s constitutional future will be decided by the people of Northern Ireland, not by commentary in London, Dublin or Washington.<\/p>\n

Kemi Badenoch, who leads the Conservative Party in Parliament, likened Trump\u2019s comments about Northern Ireland to his threats of annexing Canada and Greenland.<\/p>\n

\u201cPresident Trump is shooting from the hip as usual, just like he did with Greenland and Canada becoming the 51st state,\u201d she said on X<\/a>. \u201cThis sort of loose talk about the future of democratic countries is deeply unhelpful and creates unnecessary tension.\u201d<\/p>\n
