Seemingly every week, a new, alarming headline seizes social feeds<\/a> and forces a conversation about the dangers and future dangers of artificial intelligence.\u00a0 <\/p>\n

It doesn’t help that companies at the frontier of AI development perpetuate those fears. They incorporate them into their business models, urging people to side with them, their responsible stewardship, and their sensitivity to those dangers. That AI sales pitch is not too different from the controversial adage, “The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun.” <\/p>\n

Adding to the PR problem, several top AI labs are newcomers to consumer products. You might use AI chatbots or even rely on them, but do you really trust their makers? Trust is a funny concept in a world where the most intimate spaces and moments of our lives are digitized, searchable, and permanently recorded. (Unless your data storage runs out!)\u00a0 <\/p>\n

That makes Apple’s slow-roll AI strategy all the more appealing<\/a>.\u00a0 <\/p>\n

Sure, Cupertino isn’t feeding off the AI hype cycle like Anthropic (ANTH.PVT<\/a>) or OpenAI (OPAI.PVT<\/a>). But in the years since ChatGPT arrived, Apple has proven it doesn’t need to<\/a> \u2014 as the consumer AI pitch is markedly different from its enterprise counterpart. And slower paced. <\/p>\n

Its distance from the parade of embarrassments, controversies, and AI doomsday narratives has helped the stock. And by forfeiting the first few rounds of the tech world’s AI brawl (whether by design or organizational failure), Apple has burnished its reputation. Meanwhile, other tech companies look beaten up.\u00a0 <\/p>\n

Distrustful of rogue agents and concerned about apocalyptic AI takeovers, consumers want to turn to a tech company they can trust. And as the keynote this week underscored<\/a>, that’s core to Apple’s brand.\u00a0 <\/p>\n

The company’s focus on on-device AI plays off those concerns.\u00a0 <\/p>\n

Siri AI integrates with the rest of your phone, seamlessly drawing from other apps to research and complete tasks. Apple users can tap into more powerful cloud models, but the key idea for Apple’s next generation of smartphones and its reintroduction of Apple Intelligence is that your AI should center around your personal wants and needs, which is another way of saying your iPhone.\u00a0 <\/p>\n

The iPhone becoming the ultimate conduit for interacting with AI works on two levels: To Wall Street, it solidifies and expands Apple’s Walled Garden to include and subsume the AI transition. Apple ruled over the app economy of the 2000s. The apps are different now and will continue to change in the AI era. But Apple devices will remain the alpha platform and essential consumer portal.\u00a0\u00a0 <\/p>\n

To customers, the proposition remains straightforward. Apple’s ecosystem of devices is all that you need. They look nice and work well, have cultural prestige, and are used by influential people and your friends. AI in the Apple ecosystem extends those ideas with more clever design and engineering.\u00a0 <\/p>\n

In Apple’s sophisticated but homespun storytelling, people use AI in mundane but useful ways. Siri can recall bits of a message or email to generate a shopping list, doing what people already do on their phones, but with the mental work offloaded to an AI assistant. Linking every dimension of your life that your phone is privy to doesn’t require a new, onerous commitment or a gamble with an unproven AI startup. You are already inside the Walled Garden. Everything you might want to use AI for is already inside your phone. Or rather, it will be when you buy the new iPhone 18.\u00a0\u00a0 <\/p>\n

The selling points of a Siri infused with better AI \u2014 remembering across sessions, dancing around apps, and understanding what’s on screen \u2014 are far removed from the existential dread stirred up by current and former AI lab employees.\u00a0 <\/p>\n

Apple isn’t selling shelter and relief from potentially end-of-the-world technology. It’s selling more iPhones. You can trust them on that.\u00a0 <\/p>\n
