OpenAI<\/a> will not go public in 2026, Sam Altman<\/a> said in a Fortune interview published on Saturday, citing safety concerns over artificial intelligence<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cI actually think that, given everything happening with safety, right now would be an ill-advised moment to go public, and we don\u2019t feel pressure on that,\u201d Altman, OpenAI\u2019s CEO, told Fortune<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Growing numbers of US lawmakers \u200bare calling for new rules<\/a> to govern AI systems after dire warnings<\/a> from two researchers from OpenAI rival Anthropic that rapidly progressing artificial intelligence could lead to the extinction<\/a> of the human race \u200cin the not-too-distant future.<\/p>\n

The warnings follow cases of AI agents going rogue<\/a> to hack external systems and AI \u200bsafety researchers quitting<\/a> their companies concerned about the technology\u2019s risks. Politicians, both Democrats and Republicans, have responded with alarm and calls for more action.<\/p>\n

The New York Times in June reported<\/a> that the San Francisco-based OpenAI was considering whether to hold off on a potentially<\/a> trillion-dollar IPO until next year. At the time, shares in Elon Musk\u2019s SpaceX IPO were tumbling after a surge that sent that company\u2019s valuation to $1.8tn.<\/p>\n

When asked by Fortune whether 2026 is off the table in favor of 2027, Altman said: \u201cI would say not 2026. Yeah, we got a lot of stuff to do, like meeting this moment of what is going to be required for safety and alignment, and how the industry and governments can work together.\u201d<\/p>\n

Altman also suggested that OpenAI and other leading AI companies may be close to announcing an agreement to slow<\/a> AI development and work together to address safety risks, Fortune reported.<\/p>\n

Dario Amodei, Anthropic\u2019s CEO, on Saturday urged AI companies<\/a> to take a more deliberate approach to development.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe must slow the \u200cpace at which we improve the capabilities of AI models,\u201d Amodei wrote in an essay shared on social media.<\/p>\n

Altman later posted that he agreed with the sentiment.<\/p>\n

\u201cI agree with Dario that we need to pace the frontier,\u201d Altman wrote in a response to Amodei\u2019s post on the X platform. \u201cThis has been a primary topic of discussions we\u2019ve had at OpenAI<\/a> in recent weeks.\u201d<\/p>\n

Safety concerns have not slowed down Anthropic\u2019s own IPO plans<\/a> so far.
