Five paddleboarders and one kayaker have been rescued after being swept out to sea from Port Beach in Co Louth.<\/p>\n
Clogherhead RNLI volunteers were alerted to the incident at around 1 o’clock this afternoon.<\/p>\n
The group, who were aged between 11 and 15 years old, were accompanied by an adult and were all wearing lifejackets and wetsuits.<\/p>\n
Choppy sea conditions and southwesterly winds made it difficult for the group to stay together and they dialled 999 for assistance.<\/p>\n
The Michael O’Brien lifeboat and Clogherhead Coast Guard unit were deployed, and the Coast Guard helicopter also attended the scene.<\/p>\n
In a statement, the RNLI said the crew brought the casualties to safety onboard the lifeboat in three separate groups, who were then assessed by an advanced paramedic before being transported to Port Oriel.<\/p>\n
Upon arrival, they were further assessed by the National Ambulance Service.<\/p>\n
Coxswain Sean Flanagan said: “It was time critical that we got to this group before they became too cold and too exhausted.<\/p>\n
“It was the first shout for three of our crew members today, so fair play to them and the rest of our crew.<\/p>\n
“Six lives were saved this afternoon.<\/p>\n
