Well,<br data-node-id=\"1.3\"\/>new research suggests otherwise.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"2\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">A <a href=\"https:\/\/direct.mit.edu\/imag\/article\/doi\/10.1162\/IMAG.a.1297\/137350\/Slow-running-benefits-Boosts-in-mood-and\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/direct.mit.edu\/imag\/article\/doi\/10.1162\/IMAG.a.1297\/137350\/Slow-running-benefits-Boosts-in-mood-and\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"new study in Imaging Neuroscience\" data-node-id=\"2.1\" class=\"body-link css-rgqwc2 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">new study in Imaging Neuroscience<\/a> found that just 10 minutes of very slow running can lead to improvements in mood and executive function in the<br data-node-id=\"2.3\"\/>brain.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"3\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">Researchers recruited 24 healthy participants and had them complete both a 10-minute running session on a treadmill, done at 35 percent of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.runnersworld.com\/training\/a70019851\/the-runners-world-guide-to-vo2-max\/\" target=\"_self\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.runnersworld.com\/training\/a70019851\/the-runners-world-guide-to-vo2-max\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"VO2 max\" data-node-id=\"3.1\" class=\"body-link css-rgqwc2 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">VO2 max<\/a> (a very light effort), and a resting control session. Researchers determined executive function and mood using established research tools for each, which they tested before and after both running and resting.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"5\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">Researchers did not define \u201cslow\u201d as one fixed pace for everyone\u2014instead, they determined it based on each participant\u2019s aerobic capacity, so actual treadmill speed<br data-node-id=\"5.1\"\/>differed from one person to the next. However, all those paces did fall into the \u201cvery light intensity\u201d category, according to study lead author <a href=\"https:\/\/soyalab.taiiku.tsukuba.ac.jp\/en\/index_en.html\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/soyalab.taiiku.tsukuba.ac.jp\/en\/index_en.html\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Hideaki Soya\" data-node-id=\"5.3\" class=\"body-link css-rgqwc2 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Hideaki Soya<\/a>, PhD, at the Laboratory of Exercise Biochemistry and Neuroendocrinology at the University of Tsukuba in Japan.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"6\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">Even at a pace that was nearly the same as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.runnersworld.com\/training\/a63510515\/what-is-brisk-walking\/\" target=\"_self\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.runnersworld.com\/training\/a63510515\/what-is-brisk-walking\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"brisk walk\" data-node-id=\"6.1\" class=\"body-link css-rgqwc2 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">brisk walk<\/a>, there were significant benefits in terms of pleasurable feelings and sharpened brain function, he told Runner\u2019s World.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"7\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">\u201cAt the simplest level, the main message is that running does not have to be fast or<br data-node-id=\"7.1\"\/>hard to benefit the brain,\u201d he said. \u201cEven at the gentlest <a href=\"https:\/\/www.runnersworld.com\/training\/a63435968\/running-intensity\/\" target=\"_self\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.runnersworld.com\/training\/a63435968\/running-intensity\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"running intensity\" data-node-id=\"7.3\" class=\"body-link css-rgqwc2 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">running intensity<\/a> possible, there was greater activation in prefrontal regions of the brain that regulate emotion and mental skills.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"8\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">These results are in line with previous research done by Soya and his colleagues. For<br data-node-id=\"8.1\"\/>example, a <a href=\"https:\/\/go.redirectingat.com?id=74968X1576258&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.nature.com%2Farticles%2Fs41598-021-01654-z\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41598-021-01654-z\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"2021 study in Scientific Reports\" data-vars-ga-product-id=\"2106b9fc-9613-45bf-bec5-60e22b418412\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-node-id=\"8.3\" data-href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41598-021-01654-z\" data-product-url=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41598-021-01654-z\" data-affiliate=\"true\" data-affiliate-url=\"https:\/\/go.redirectingat.com?id=74968X1576258&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.nature.com%2Farticles%2Fs41598-021-01654-z\" data-affiliate-network=\"{&quot;site_id&quot;:&quot;0edc3368-766f-4b81-be22-1eddee521647&quot;,&quot;network&quot;:{&quot;name&quot;:&quot;Skimlinks&quot;}}\" data-fp-affiliate-inline-link=\"true\" data-fp-affiliate-button-link=\"false\" data-vars-ga-product-brand=\"nature.com\" data-vars-ga-product-retailer-id=\"5f21c08b-be0a-47b6-b930-293a72771b43\" data-vars-ga-product-sem3-brand=\"nature.com\" data-vars-ga-link-treatment=\"(not set) | (not set)\" class=\"body-link product-links css-rgqwc2 e1aq0z090\">2021 study in Scientific Reports<\/a> found that 10 minutes of moderate-intensity running\u2014done at 50 percent of  VO2 max (around <a href=\"https:\/\/www.runnersworld.com\/training\/a62519617\/zone-2-running\/\" target=\"_self\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.runnersworld.com\/training\/a62519617\/zone-2-running\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"zone 2\" data-node-id=\"8.6\" class=\"body-link css-rgqwc2 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">zone 2<\/a>)\u2014led to a considerable boost in executive function and mood regulation.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"9\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">Although the recent and previous studies are limited due to the small number of<br data-node-id=\"9.1\"\/>participants, other research has suggested there\u2019s a connection between running<br data-node-id=\"9.3\"\/>and mental health. For example, a<a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC7663387\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC7663387\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\" research review published in the InternationalJournal of Environmental Research and Public Health\" data-node-id=\"9.5\" class=\"body-link css-rgqwc2 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"> research review published in the International<br data-node-id=\"9.5.2\"\/>Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health<\/a> in 2020, which included 116 studies, found that both short-term and long-term running are associated with improvements in a range of mental health outcomes, including depression and anxiety.<\/p>\n<p>How Running Boosts the Brain and Benefits Different Populations<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"11\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">The mechanism, even in very slow running, may be related in part to the way light aerobic exercise has a rhythmic, bouncing quality compared to an activity like<br data-node-id=\"11.1\"\/>walking, said Soya. Specifically, the type of head movement involved seems to<br data-node-id=\"11.3\"\/>make a difference for brain activation, including mood effects, he added.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"12\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">\u201cSimply put, slow running may \u2018wake up\u2019 the brain through this type of motion,\u201d<br data-node-id=\"12.1\"\/>Soya said. \u201cDuring running, both feet leave the ground briefly, so the<br data-node-id=\"12.3\"\/>entire body\u2014all the way up to the head\u2014undergoes a rhythmic vertical<br data-node-id=\"12.5\"\/>acceleration. In our data, this rhythm was positively correlated with the<br data-node-id=\"12.7\"\/>increase in pleasure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"13\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">Although Soya noted that we need more research, particularly with a larger participant group, these findings on very slow running should be heartening for those who prefer less intensity but still enjoy running\u2014or for those who want to start but are nervous that they aren\u2019t \u201cfast enough\u201d to see benefits.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"14\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">\u201cFor people with low fitness, older adults, people for whom conventional running is<br data-node-id=\"14.1\"\/>difficult, or for people who simply dislike hard exercise, this research shows that the mechanics and rhythm of running itself add something unique to the brain, even at very slow speeds,\u201d he said. \u201cThis is great news for people who have avoided running simply because the activity feels too demanding.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"15\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">Even for runners who are used to a more moderate or vigorous pace, adding <a href=\"https:\/\/www.runnersworld.com\/training\/a71413269\/slow-running-benefits\/\" target=\"_self\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.runnersworld.com\/training\/a71413269\/slow-running-benefits\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"slow running sessions\" data-node-id=\"15.1\" class=\"body-link css-rgqwc2 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">slow running sessions<\/a> into a schedule can be helpful, according to Jill Becker, RRCA-certified running coach and personal trainer at Life Time in Denver, Colorado.
