Formally known as SELENE, which is short for SELenological and ENgineering Explorer, it was Japan&#8217;s second moon mission.<\/p>\n<p>Kaguya launched from <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/34270-tanegashima-space-center.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/34270-tanegashima-space-center.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/34270-tanegashima-space-center.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tanegashima Space Center<\/a> on a Japanese <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/40629-japanese-rockets-hiia-hiib.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/40629-japanese-rockets-hiia-hiib.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/40629-japanese-rockets-hiia-hiib.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">H-IIA rocket<\/a> and looped around the Earth twice before heading to the moon. NOTE: While the launch occurred on Sept. 13 in the evening Eastern Time, it was actually 10:31 a.m. on Sept. 14 at the launch site. The spacecraft carried 14 science instruments and two tiny microsatellites to map the moon&#8217;s surface and study its gravitational field.<\/p>\n<p>After a 20-day journey, Kaguya arrived at <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/55-earths-moon-formation-composition-and-orbit.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/55-earths-moon-formation-composition-and-orbit.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/55-earths-moon-formation-composition-and-orbit.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the moon<\/a>. The mission consisted of three spacecraft: a main orbiter, a small communications satellite, <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/4451-japan-moon-probe-births-baby-satellite-snaps-photos.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/4451-japan-moon-probe-births-baby-satellite-snaps-photos.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/4451-japan-moon-probe-births-baby-satellite-snaps-photos.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">and a third small satellite <\/a>to map the moon&#8217;s gravitational field. (Image credit: JAXA)<a id=\"elk-c4d4c6ac-af96-11f1-b92b-b5d7330f9be9\"\/>Why it mattered<a id=\"elk-seasonal\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-c4d4c71a-af96-11f1-b3b7-b97662a75659-0\">The Kaguya moon mission was actually the second lunar probe launched by Japan, but it was the country&#8217;s first spacecraft to actually orbit the moon. (<a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/mission\/hiten-hagoromo\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/mission\/hiten-hagoromo\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Japan&#8217;s Hiten spacecraft<\/a> launched in 1990, but it flew in a highly elliptical orbit around Earth that allowed it to make 10 flybys of the moon before crashing into the lunar surface in 1993. It also released a small probe called Hagoromo near the moon.)<\/p>\n<p>But while the Hiten and Hagoromo missions were designed to test technology for a future moon mission, Kaguya put all that tech into practice. The probe was <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/4345-japan-launches-kaguya-probe-moon-mission.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/4345-japan-launches-kaguya-probe-moon-mission.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/4345-japan-launches-kaguya-probe-moon-mission.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">renamed after the moon princess Kaguya-hime<\/a> from a Japanese folktale shortly after launch as a result of a public poll. The two small satellites it carried were named Okina (a relay satellite) and Ouna (a radio source experiment).<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-c4d4c7ec-af96-11f1-b14f-9df70a723298\">While Kaguya carried an intricate set of science instruments, it was the views from its two primary high-definition cameras that wowed the public. With them, Kaguya captured the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/4451-japan-moon-probe-births-baby-satellite-snaps-photos.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/4451-japan-moon-probe-births-baby-satellite-snaps-photos.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/4451-japan-moon-probe-births-baby-satellite-snaps-photos.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">first-ever HD video and images of the moon<\/a>, including <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/4630-wow-moon-probe-captures-earth-rise-high-definition.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/4630-wow-moon-probe-captures-earth-rise-high-definition.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/4630-wow-moon-probe-captures-earth-rise-high-definition.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">spectacular new videos of Earthrise<\/a> (the Earth rising over the moon) &#8211; something not seen since NASA&#8217;s Apollo missions.<\/p>\n<p>The spacecraft also created an complete topographical map of the moon, detected gravity anomalies on the near and far side of the moon and captured the first optical observations of the permanently shadowed interior of <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16222-moon-water-ice-shackleton-crater.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16222-moon-water-ice-shackleton-crater.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16222-moon-water-ice-shackleton-crater.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Shackleton Crater<\/a> near the moon&#8217;s south pole, <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/mission\/kaguya\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/mission\/kaguya\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">according to a NASA review<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Kaguya completed its primary mission in October 2008 and JAXA mission planners had hoped to extend its moon flight through early 2009, but a faulty reaction wheel forced them to call off the extended mission early. They ultimately <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/6825-japan-kaguya-probe-slams-moon.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/6825-japan-kaguya-probe-slams-moon.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/6825-japan-kaguya-probe-slams-moon.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">directed Kaguya to crash into the moon<\/a> on Feb. 12, 2009, with the impact occurring near Gill Crater.<\/p>\n<p>Want more space history?
