An unhappy Michael Carrick<\/a> expressed concern over Erling Haaland\u2019s<\/a> winner in Manchester City\u2019s<\/a> derby victory against Manchester United<\/a> not being ruled out for Enzo Fern\u00e1ndez interfering with play when in an offside position.<\/p>\n

Haaland\u2019s 60th-minute strike at Old Trafford on Sunday came after Jo\u0161ko Gvardiol\u2019s cross hit Patrick Dorgu\u2019s boot, passed Fern\u00e1ndez and United defender Lisandro Mart\u00ednez and was finished by the Norwegian striker.<\/p>\n

After the goal was ruled out initially for offside, the video assistant referee decided Fern\u00e1ndez was not interfering despite Mart\u00ednez marking the Argentinian midfielder. This left Carrick discontented and confused.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt the time I hadn\u2019t totally seen it. But the explanation I got was he wasn\u2019t interfering with play, so I just don\u2019t get it,\u201d the United manager said. \u201cI can\u2019t understand how they\u2019re trying to help referees and putting so many layers behind them with so many people, screens, and so many whatever offices they are to try and come up with the right decisions.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf that\u2019s how the rules are interpreted, that you\u2019re not interfering with play because you\u2019ve thrown yourself at the ball six yards from goal and pretty much nearly touched it, which then Lisandro has to react from \u2013 it\u2019s worrying if that\u2019s really how the game\u2019s seen by those who are officiating it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Carrick was asked if an apology from the official body, Pro Ref, would be welcome. \u201cYeah, that\u2019d be great, that. Yeah, I can\u2019t wait for that one,\u201d he said. \u201cI don\u2019t really know how you go and get another explanation on that one. I think we all understand what that rule means [regarding interfering with play], and it\u2019s pretty obvious. It\u2019s as obvious as it gets.\u201d<\/p>\n

Enzo Maresca<\/a>, though, was adamant that Fern\u00e1ndez was not interfering. \u201cYeah \u2013 and the fourth official said Erling is onside,\u201d the City manager said.<\/p>\n

The 199th Manchester derby\u2019s other controversial decision was Phil Foden\u2019s 22nd-minute red card. The forward kicked Bruno Fernandes in the stomach, but only after United\u2019s captain had kicked him. Maresca backed Michael Oliver\u2019s red card but also suggested the referee should have sent off Fernandes also.<\/p>\n

\u201cPhil Foden red card is a red card, but I also think it is red card from Bruno,\u201d City\u2019s manager said. \u201cReviewing the action, it is a clear red card for Phil because it is a reaction but you can also see Bruno\u2019s [action].\u201d<\/p>\n

City now have 12 points, second only to Arsenal on goal difference, while United have only four points and are 13th. \u201cWe will get there, I\u2019m convinced of that,\u201d Carrick said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe haven\u2019t got as many points as we wanted and we should have. We\u2019ve got to accept that and take that. It doesn\u2019t change us moving forward and our hopes for the season and what we can achieve as a team.
